Stuck in valet mode
I just picked up a 97 xk8 convertible. It has only one key, no remote. The key is not a valet key. The car is stuck in valet mode. Putting the key in the trunk lock does nothing.
Any ideas how I can get it out of valet mode and get the trunk open?

If you have the proper black head key, using it turns off valet mode.
Does the button for the trunk release work? If yes, then you are not in valet mode. Same for the gas cover button I think.
Just for fun, check the valet button under the dash. They love to stick.

It sounds like you have the valet key. Otherwise the regular black headed key would open the trunk or if in the ignition, you could push the trunk button on the dash. If you do only have the valet key, look at the tip. The part that projects at the end, about a quarter inch, is slightly fatter than the corresponding black key. That keeps it from going all the way into the trunk opener. Carefully file it down, reducing the diameter until it does go in and you're home free.
Great suggestion, Don T unfortunately,I have the black key. When put in the trunk lock, it turns but nothing happens. The gas door will open, but the trunk button doesn't do anything.
I'll check to see if the valet button is stuck. Any other way to get the trunk open?

It is likely that the lock is siezed and the wires from the trunk button are broken so neither method of opening works. Try WD40 or better still locksmiths graphite to loosen the lock. It is possible to get access if all these methods fail, there are holes in the trunk behind the numberplate from which you can actuate the lock. Once open trace the wires to the lock button and replace.

It (sometimes!) helps to see what should be happening inside the latching setup when the key is turned. The Parts Catalogue diagram is about the clearest:

(click on the image to enlarge it)
1. opening with the remote or the lid button
the electric lock actuator (item 3) pulls the remote release cable (item 5) to release the latch (item 1).
2. opening with the key
using the black headed key in the lock barrel (item 4) pulls the cable (item 2) to release the latch
If the key turns easily both ways in the lock, it's likely that cable (item 2) is detached or broken.

So the mystery is what did the previous owner leave you in the trunk, which you can't open... all sorts of crazy thoughts pass my mind, but i read too many mystery novels... good luck
