Default Sun visor problem

Yesterday I flipped the sun visor down and the door covering the mirror hangs down.
Broken spring I would suspect. Has anyone pulled the mirror out. Don't want to break anything. I'm an EE not an ME. 5 years and 60,000 miles. Gas cap failed, now the mirror.
Not a typical jaguar.

Gus has instructions on how to fix a mirror. Here's a link to his site:

Good Luck

Gus's instructions are perfect.

Only two things I will add is that the mirrors are pretty stubborn to get out if you just try to pull straight out. Instead, open the mirror and take a thin, flat screwdriver between the mirror surround and the outside trim on either the right or left side of the mirror (not the top or bottom), and it should edge out nicely. It's a very tight fit.

Also remember that the wires are hard-soldiered with no plugs or clips, so the repair should either be done in place or you can also remove the metal that the wires are soldiered on to in order to remove the mirror mount.

You'll have to feed the metal through the holes, so remember what holes they came through in order to re-assemble after the glue dries.

I couldn't agree more regarding waiting until the glue dries before giving it a try. Otherwise, they can spring right out and you may never see them again.

Lastly, I used the 2-part Liquid Metal (JB Weld) for the adhesive, and it holds beautifully.

My 2-cents

What failed on your gas cap? There was a recall on the gas cap itself, for a 1999.
Also I , up until recently always used JB on everything but I'm now using more plastic epoxy 2 parts syringe style. It has a 7 minute set time and 24 hr cure. But unlike the JB it will dry clear. Plus you can coat the back of the plastic parts with the epoxy. we all know how brittle they become.

My repair didn't go so well. My adhesive must've ran to the edge and secured the entire hinge...it broke after I reinstalled it. I'm now w/o a visor...but left the mirror there, just in case the ladies need to freshen up. At least it doesn't dangle upon opening anymore. Broken > Flopping around

It's the visor that is broken and flopping around right? Other wise there would be no need for the ladies.

Fixed the mirror on the visor.

Gus: Excellent instructions...
Daddyo007: Did not ask what was wrong with the gas cap. Car was under warranty.

After all the bragging on the lack of problems on my car, today the steering wheel did not return to the "up" position. It retracted, but did not make it all the way up.
Suspect the potentiometer. We will see....
