Supercharger belt replacement

Default Supercharger belt replacement

Ok, before I start let me say that I do know how to use and read the JTIS. The instructions say that before removal of the supercharger belt one must first remove the cooling fan and shroud (26.25.25). Drain the cooling system, detach the ac tube, remove the radiator hose and intercooler hose, the wiring harness and the motor shroud bolt.
I removed the shroud bolt and the wiring harness but I don't see any connection to the hoses mentioned, I still am unable to lift the fans and shroud up and out. Does some one have a more descriptive procedure for removing the shroud. Chilton and Clymer manuels are better than the JTIS although I can not find one.

I recently changed mine. You may want to do the main belt while you have the fans out. Both belts are about 70-80 bucks

1/ Drain coolant passenger side (usa) bottom of radiator theres a black plug.
2/ Remove passenger side top hose into radiator
3/ Remove driver side top hose into radiator.
4/ Unplug elec connectors into the two fans and cut out the cable ties
5/ Undo the two nuts that secure the fan housing 3inches down from the top on either side.
6/ Lift out fans they side up
7/ Remove super charger belt with a square end drive 3/8 I think on the lowest pulley. That's the adjuster one.

Reinstall is reverse but remember to check the flaps at the bottom of the fan housing are in place after you have put the fans back. They tend to get caught. Also dont use the Jaguar brand belts as they tend to squeal other after market belts have better technology these days. Remember to bleed the supercharger after you have refilled the coolant.

Here is a post with some more info on how to change the belt without having the need to drain coolant and remove the front fans. I can switch the belt win about 5 to 10 minutes this way.

You have to drain the fluid and remove the top hoses on the XKR as you cannot get to the bolts and the fan housing will fit between the two top hosed. Even with the Jag tool to turn the super charger pulley you will find it very difficult to get the belt out past the fan housing.

The bonnet is not the issue. Job takes about 20-30min

Don't want to go into contest here, only want to let you here that I am changing belts on a regular basis to test out different pulleys. I am using the tool but even a piece of wood would do. First you need to make sure the belt surface area sits vertical between the 2 idler comfortable. Then you can push it from below out between the 2 idlers as far as you can, then slightly pull, and of it is. This method is a lot less messy, and way faster obviously, but everyone their way of course.

I have removed both of the hex nuts and the electrical connections without removing the hoses. The shroud will lift up about one and one half inches but seems to get hung up, but I cannot determine on what.

Did you cut the cable ties on the passenger (USA) side they hold the wires in place across the fan. Also getting those hex nuts with sliders back in is difficult with the hoses in place. If you have done 50K + miles you may want to change your coolant + water pump if its the original with the plastic fins (water pump $50 on eBay coolant $25 for the orange stuff (Prestone Dex-Cool) at Autozone)

If your changing the main belt I found I had to loosen the supercharger adjuster pulley in order to get the main belt out as the gap is very tight.

Can anyone explain why the coolant has to be drained to replace the supercharger belt?

Because you are removing radiators hoses (unless you do it the way Avos describes, then you do not need to remove hoses or drain coolant).

BTW, you can get a Goodyear Gatorback 4080515 supercharger belt at Amazon for $26.05. Lots of folks consider these the best belts..especially for the supercharger where slippage is very undesirable....and this is a great price with free shipping. Seems like they only keep one in stock at a time, but then they come back in stock in a few days.

I dont drain coolant or remove hoses, fans or anything else, not even the tensioner. You just slip the belt in flat behind it for the engine and then do the SC belt.

No, it looks like the belt size changed when they went to the 4.2L in 2003. Try the VIN decoder on the Goodyear site: http://www.vindecipher.com/veyance/

I personally use belts from Gates, and for the 4.2 engine you can use the K080525 Micro-V belt (and K080514 for the 4.0 engines)

I must admit I change my belts exactly the same way as avos and have made exactly the same tool (great minds and all that ;-) But for someone who does not, the easiest way is take off the top radiator hose at the radiator only and lift it up out of the way, I often tie a larg cable tie around it to hold it there, remove the fan assembly and then you have easy access to the lot, and like has been said attached to the fan assembly are a couple of pipes for the aircon. Once done put it all back and just top up the coolant, go for a short drive to get the air out the system and Bobs your uncle.

I wont deny I have done it on a roadside with just a lever bar and removed nothing but it is fiddly and damn hot

I highly recommend these. They are the only ones I'll use on my GTO now. The factory Delcos would chirp on the 1-2 shift at full bore. These are just quiet.

Avos,
I`m thinking of buying the supercharger belt tension release tool, but before I do I want to ask you if you can change the belt with the aid of this tool and do it all from the top, ie you don`t have the car on a lift to have access to the underside to do this do you? I want to change my belt without draining coolant and removing the fans...thanks in advance...
