Default suspension fault light

Just took my newly acquired 2004 xkr convertible out for first ride. After a few miles the "suspension fault" light came on! Got home and found the tire pressure was way high (36 psi v 26psi recommended) Not sure that had anything to do with problem but I have no idea what the problem could be or what to do about it. Help please!

The true answer is to get a Jaguar code reader and get the actual code(s). Then head to jagrepair.com for details about the code. Barring that, I would say start with checking the connections to the top of the front shocks (easy to check), but the more recent posts have been about frayed/twisted/broken wires at the top of the rear shocks. Seems hard to get to, but there are tricks apparently to make this easier and not drop the entire rear subframe. You can also confirm continuity to each of the shocks at the module itself (it is in the trunk). Jagrepair also has the electrical diagram, it is all documented. You can also disconnect the module entirely to make the message go away, but the system defaults the shocks rebound to stiff (compression is not adjustable).

Here's what I did. Thanks to someone's post on Jaguarforums I found that removing fuses 2 and 4 in the trunk fuse box removed power from the adaptive suspension. I removed fuses 2 and 4, started the car the fault light was out, replaced the two fuses and viola the car drove w/o the fault light coming on. Removing those fuses and then replacing them must reset something. We'll see in coming days but so far so good! Thanks

Alan, it can be a couple of things. I've seen this fault with a worn / failing rear wheel bearing for example. (In fact it just happened to me yesterday.I cant wait to replace the bearing in the winter! Should be a lot easier since this is 3rd time for me). It can happen with a dirty wheel speed sensor too (much more common and easy to remedy yourself).

As you plan, drive her around, see if it comes back. If it does, I bet Joe at Flemington Foriegn car has a reader that can pinpoint the issue in a couple of seconds.

Wanted to give you a heads up on tire pressure. 26lbs sounds awfully low to me. Different pressure for different wheel tire combos, I set mine at 34 rear 32 front. You know the recommended pressure is listed on a label under the center console lid right? Play around a bit - you'll feel a difference faster than one might expect. IMO even 2lbs is a big difference in suspension performance/feel. Probably even more so with your R type suspension.

Just checking: Do you have an accurate / precise pressure gauge? The ones in autozone or advanced auto parts here in NJ are +/- 5% or 10% accuracy at best mate. Unacceptable IMO.

You can get a guage with better than 1% accuracy at amazon.

You're new to this car so a quick fyi: sometimes the suspension fault causes ABS to light up and fault. I know you pulled fuses to clear, often times the fault resets with an ignition off on cycle. After a reset or fix, you'll still see ABS lit and reading failure - that's OK don't get frustrated.

Wanted to let you know that you must drive forward 30 or 40 feet for ABS light to automatically clear itself once the issue is fixed.

John, Thanks for the response! I will drive it a bit more a hope the suspension fault light does not come back on. I was shocked when I located the tire pressure sticker (under the console lid) and it said 26 psi! I had 36 psi in each tire. I lowered them all to 30 psi because...well 26 seems too low!

Had new shocks put in (not at a Jag dealer) came back with suspension fault code. They tired to fix the problem but nothing worked. They insisted they didn’t pinch a wire. Tried hard resets to no avail. Removed the two fuses like you suggested and fault code is gone. Put fuses back in the the code returns. Been running without the fuses and seems to be ok except hard suspension. Thanks for the tip.
