Default Does a Body Control Module have to be programmed?

I think I have a bad BCM unit. There is one on eBay for 68 bucks from a donor car the same year as mine. It is from a big seller and it can be returned if needed so I decided to go with that option vs rebuilding mine.

Will I necessarily have to get the unit reprogrammed to match my VIN? With what the dealer probably charges I may have mine rebuilt if I have to incur that expense.

If the numbers fully match your VCATS label you're probably OK, but...

...what symptoms are you experiencing that makes you suspect there's an issue with your BPM?

A number of things:
1-when I turned off the car I heard a strange clicking from the ignition, when I pulled the BCM fuse it stopped
2- the convertible top just stopped in the middle of me lowering it, i then restarted and it went okay
3 - The unlock, lock function seem to have intermittent issues.

Upon visual inspection, I do not see any bad capacitors, but I have never done any circuit board work successfully so I am not sure how to test it.

Hi Scott,
2) & 3) could be SLM-related - do you have any codes?

There's more than one fuse to the BPM - which one did you pull?

My new (used) BCM is coming tomorrow. For $70 swaping it out will hopefully fix it, if not it will be a piece of the puzzle and I can return the module, sell it, or keep it as a spare. I got the VIN from the donor car and it is only a hundred or so away from mine, both convertibles so hopefully it is a match.

You were correct, it is not the BPM. Now I am seeing a flashing red light by the shifter and the key fob will not work so moving to the SLM. I have some questions on that but will start a new thread so it may help others. If you have any knowledge on this topic I would appreciate your advice in that thread also here

for you information you ask for problems with used modules programmed to other cars. They can have different build files programmed which can cause other issues and it doesn't matter if the vin is 1 number off. the other modules on the car all carry Your cars vin number. When there's a mismatch vin they wont communicate with the module. Depending on the module that can cause immediate issues or issue down the road. We never "program" used modules, cant, software gives a vin mismatch and will not go further in changing. years ago we could but Jaguar Land Rover changed all that. They sell NEW and don't support you buying used. This is true of every manufacturer I know and initially was pushed by insurance companies to combat auto theft and the market of these parts.

Thanks! based on this I am just going to send the current one out for repair. The cost is not a big deal, it is just the turnaround time that is a bit longer than just getting a used one. 2 to 3 days each way for shipping and up to 3 days for the work. If it is the better option, it will be time well spent. Going with Module Repair Pro.

Hi Guys,
I just picked up this thread. I took my '06 XK8 to local mech for 'Cruise control inop' 'Check Rear lights', and drvrs air bag light. Brake switch had been changed x2 with no improvement. After extensive checks($300), mech says that the BCM is likely bad, and needs to go to the dealer. Never trusted the dealers, esp. on older car. Should I go for the module rebuild(Where), or bite the bullet and go to the dealer?
