telltale noises from failing chain tensioners?
I've read the threads on failing chain tensioners. Is there always a telltale warning noise when the tensioners are failing? One post likened the sound to an anchor chain being let out on startup. Is it worth the cost of having the tensioners inspected if there is no noise? ($650 quoted from an independent shop.) The engine runs quiet at startup and no problems are apparent.
I have a '98 XK8 with 54,000 miles.
Thanks for any advice

You have the first generation tensioners. They will fail. The penalty for failing is the pistons will bend your valves. The positive side is that you get a new engine.
Chain rattle may announce the piston/valve situation, not just a warning.
My '02 had a split body at 46k miles. My '00 had the tensioners replaced twice under original warranty and Select Edition warranty.

Let me stop and ask a question. Do you know that the tensioners have not been replaced? Many of the '97 - '98 cars have already had the work done.
It is the secondary tensioners that seem to fail most often probably because of the higher temperature of the heads verses the front of the engine.
Most owners only change the secondary ones.
