Default Thermostat seals

Hi all.

I have installed a new aluminium thermostat housing. There is a slight leak from the thermostat cover. Could somebody please tell me what kind of gaskets/seals I am supposed to have, and in which order they are to be installed.
I may be missing a seal and the JTIS/JEPC are somewhat ambigous.

There should be a o-ring there. I recall some reports of leaks due to a thread quality issue. You might see if you can buy a thicker o-ring if there is one there and still leaking.

You did fit the largest of the rubber gaskets with the groove onto the edge of the Thermostat before putting it into to Tower.........?

Yes, I did, but the rubber gasket looks somewhat to thin.

It should be quite thick.

I haven't got a photo of one I've fitted but pulled this off the web:

When the Thermostat is fitted into the Tower, the gasket should protrude beyond the joint face and not be flush with it.

Mine came from Welsh enterprises, works perfectly. Just a thought, did yours come with the thermostat? Mine didn't and I ordered one from Rock Auto, they shipped one that didn't fit properly (they did give me a prompt refund and I didn't need to ship it back). Make sure yours is exactly like the one you took out. If it isn't you can get one from your local Ford dealer, I believe it is the same as a 2002 Lincoln LS. Although they charged me $38.

I had this problem - the alloy thermostat housing had a strengthening rib that slightly fouled the thermostat when tightened down - prevented the seal from being fully clamped down - I ended up grinding away at the rib until it no longer came into contact with the thermostat.

Yes Batroute, that was the issue with mine. The one from Rock Auto had a higher shoulder than the OEM thermostat. I though about grinding but I'm not that adventurous but your fix is the cheaper, faster method. The picture Graham posted is the correct one with the lower shoulder.

Hopefully (knock wood) fixed. Dremeled off a little bit of the reinforcement rib in the thermostat cover, and fitted an extra 2mm seal.
No leak so far.
Thank you all for good advice.
