The third brake light in my XK8 coupe literally disintegrated on me a while back. I'm not too interested in buying a new part for ~$250, especially since I have the lens from an X350 that plugs directly into the loose wire in my car. Has anyone crafted a new third brake light housing, or modified another car's housing to fit an XK8? I'm convinced that there has to be some cheaper option than buying a new unit which will likely just crumble again in another few years.
My housing also crumbled. I replaced the LED portion with one ( slightly modified) from an Xtype. The housing I taped back together as best I could with some thin aluminum tape. I then covered it with a piece of leather from the Console lid after I did that replacement. You could also use vinyl. The console lid leather fit pretty well, and with a little glue looks good. I used a couple of pieces of Velcro on the bottom to hold the assembly to the package tray. It's not a concours fix, but it will pass inspection for any non-XK8 owner.
I hear ya! My XK8 coupe (1998 in BRG) has a third brake light that is loose (clips broken) and looks like crap (previous owner tried to remedy with tape).
I will keep looking on ebay (no luck for a month) but SNG Barratt offers the cover part it seems and only in black (not SDZ cashmere). LJA5003ABXXX for $158.
But it is primed and ready for paint so this seems to be the only option.
