Default Thoughts on redoing Interior Trim (A Pillar and Header)

I am having the A-Pillars, Header, and Visors reupholstered professionally. I am too much of a perfectionist to be satisfied with my own work.

The A-Pillars and Header will be done in headliner fabric (similar to the existing AGD) but the visors I am having done in leather. The visor recommendation came from the upholsterer as he said the fabric just doesn't have enough play to work with for a durable finish.

I am having the leather visor's match (as close as possible) the new pillars, vs the NED of the seats.

I am also have the center console and cup holder recovered.

I thought about leather for everything, but wanted to keep it simple.

Thoughts?

I had a guy install a new ACME headliner in my convertible and it looks amazing, so the next thing is to have the header and A-pillars recovered to match. I've got the extra fabric to do it, just haven't found the time yet.

The A pillars just pull out? So it would be as simple as recovering them and popping back in?

Also, did you do the rear by the subwoofer? I hate that fabric!

I did, the concern was the sun fading and water as I have a convertible.

I'm a bit nervous to see how it turns out, but these guys are the go to in my area and I'm sure they said it would look ok.

Hopefully, they can get the material and fit me in in the next two weeks, so I'll be second guessing myself until then :-0

A pillars are super easy to remove. Sam has a video on the recovering. The fact that I wanted the center header and visors done pushed me to a pro.

Only caution is use even pressure to pull them out, the tabs break easily.

Yes, they just pop off. Those are really simple to recover. It's the header that looks a bit more troublesome. The only other thing that needed redone in mine was the headliner because the first owner put the top down when wet and left it down long enough to dry rot. The guy I had install the new headliner did a fantastic job, but it took him 3 days to finish. That was definitely something I wouldn't tackle myself.

see, knowing how brittle the old plastic is (having broken some and buying a big tube of gorilla glue to keep in my glove box now) I fear doing some things myself. I don't mind getting my hands dirty, but the thought of breaking the pillar or screwing up the headliner makes me super happy just to pay a professional.

The convertible header is a fairly easy DIY with only a dozen screws to remove and it falls in your lap.

Pics showing how to do it are here

I recently changed the top latch hoses on mine, so most of the interior had to come out. I took the "opportunity" to recover the A pillars and header while they were off.

I bought a 4-pc. set of plastic trim tools at Harbor Freight for $7.99 before my 20% discount and they paid for themselves easily with this job. Take your time with the trim and use even pressure. My blue cat is 16 years old and a convertible, so the plastic is well baked at this point. Took them off (twice) with no problems. A pillars pop off (start at the top), light console pops off (start at the smaller end closest to you), and once the visor clips are out, the header just falls down.

I also disconnected the battery just to be safe.

Dropped it off at the Upholstery shop this morning. I'll post before and after pics when she's done.

Picked it up, however, needs to go back as there is an issue. They will redo the header. You may see a dark spot over the dome, that's why we are redoing. They think it's water but there has never been any signs of a leak. Anyway, they are happy to redo and I'll keep an eye on it.

I'll get better shots when it's redone.

Looks pretty good. Do you know what material they ended up using? I picked up a sample of an almost exact match headliner material from JoAnne fabrics in anticipation of one day doing an A-pillar. The mistake I made was that a year ago or so I bought a replacement A-pillar for the driver's side in nimbus grey from SNG Barrett but never got around to installing it. But recently the passenger side one has been looking a bit squirrelly but when I checked into buying a replacement, it has been discontinued.

So not sure what to do now but I guess I should at least get around to installing that new driver's side one and then somehow address the passenger side.

Doug

It's headliner material for the A-Pilar and hearer, the visors are leather.

It was cheaper to get these recovered than replacing with new (even if they were available). The A-Pilars should be around $130 each and the header is around $350. I paid $500 for all the two A-pilars, the header, visors in leather, and center armrest.
