Default Touch-Up Paint....

After checking the local dealership price on a half-ounce bottle of White Onyx touch-up paint ($31.00 and they don't stock it so they'll have to order it, plus 25 miles to pick it up and 25 miles back home), I decided to order a bottle from automotivetouchup.com after reading their website testimonials (several of them from jaguarforums.com members). Less than $14.00 including shipping. The bottle arrived today and it is a perfect color match just as they guarantee. I also like the fact that it is more substantial than the very thin (and lousy) Lexus white touch-up paint that I had to use on my wife's previous SUV....

I'm going to wait for cooler, low-humidity weather to use it on my wife's XK8, but I just wanted to say that the color match is perfect and it certainly appears to be a quality product at a decent price....

If you're looking for touch-up paint, check 'em out....

You can also check out Dr. Colorchip at drcolorchip.com. They have a system whereupon you touch up the scratch, smear the paint with your thumb in a rubber glove (I know it sounds bizarre), then wait five minutes for it to dry and use their "blending" liquid to smooth it all out (they have YouTube videos). I used it on my Titanium Gray 2000 XK8 and was pleasantly surprised at the results; you almost couldn't find the scratch unless you looked really hard. More expensive than automotivetouchup.com, but an interesting alternative.

When I have had body work done in the past, I always ask them for a vial of the paint they used so that I have an exact match for touch up, in fact, the very same paint as was used. Why don't you ask the shop that performed all of the body work to your wife's car to provide you with a little leftover paint?

My experience with Dr. Colorchip and a few others is that they're not very good and don't perform as claimed.

I did indeed ask the body shop for a bottle of touch-up paint. Unfortunately, I neglected to do so until several days after all painting was complete and there was none remaining (I was still wrapped up in searching the globe for the unobtainable new replacement wheel and forgot to ask). I should have made my request before the painting process began. Lesson learned....

An interesting difference between facilities available in the UK and US.

1. over here just about any autoparts store has the equipment and materials on-site to accurately mix touch-in paint to the Jaguar code
BUT
2. it's almost impossible to find anywhere to have codes read

In the US it appears:

1. you can get codes read on just about every street corner
BUT
2. touch-in paint is extremely difficult to find and varying quality

I've had reasonably good success with Paint Scratch on 2 of my Jags both red but different shades.
