Transmission overfilled
Hi all.
I had my transmission changed this summer by an authorized Jaguar dealer in Germany as it broke down during my summer vacation trip. Ever since the shifting quality has not been what it used to be. Somewhat rough on downshifting and slightly overreving on upshift. No codes what so ever, so I suspected a slightly low oil level.
Finally got the time to rig up after sourcing oil and reading all about level check.
Big surprise. Doing everything by the book (JTIS), 1,5 litres came out of the filler hole.
First I thought I had done a mistake, but all was correct. Temperature, car level, engine running and the right plug. Adjusted to correct level and now it shifts like a dream.
Should you trust a dealer? That is up to you. I don't.
Transmission ZF 5HP24.

Hmmm, .... your description of upshifts and downshifts sounds just like what I've experienced since having the tranny worked on at a decent German car shop. They should have been familiar with the 6HP26 (BMWs & AUDIs) and did say so, but, ..... I think I'll put her on the rack and check for myself.
What method did you use to measure the fluid temperature? Did you put the plug back in at the high or low end of the acceptable temperature range?

Hi.
Scardini, I am so lucky I have a WDS/IDS on an old laptop to read the temperature. The plug was put back in the middle of the range, at about 40C. The temperature is climbing slowly when the engine is running, but you have plenty of time if you start out around 30C.
I wanted to doublecheck. Then you need time. It took hours for the fluid to cool down.
Lots of warnings in JTIS about burning hot fluid. I felt neither fluid nor exhaust pipes were too hot to touch.
