Transmission trouble
that doesn't make sense . if the pump gear wasn't jammed against the stator ,why was it hard to turn ?
if the pump wasn't trying to work ,by grinding the gear into the stator , how did you get fwd and rev engagement ?
I won't argue ,but I have seen , and repaired , hundreds of "butted up" convertor fails in the 30 yrs I've been in the trans trade

I didn't explain clearly. When I found it jammed I took the transmission out and lined the shaft up with the dogs, not knowing they had broken loose. They had not slipped out of position. I realized it was jammed when trying to bolt the flywheel to the torque converter, so the engine was never run with them jammed.
When I then put the transmission back in the car everything appeared okay, but of course the pump wasn't functioning. The dogs were just spinning with the input shaft but not making contact with the gear.

Not really engaged. The engine slowed a bit when I shifted but the wheels did not turn. I assume the clutches were slipping and immediately went back to neutral.
I'll drop the pan as soon as I get it back in the car. The replacement parts should be here next week, and meanwhile I'll make a new case gasket as I can't see buying a full set just for that.
