Default trouble after transmission fluid change

Thought i would run this past the experts. I just had the trans fluid changed on my 2003 XK8 with 120,000 km on the odometer. Only reason was the "bark" in hot weather and a bit of preventive care. Anyway, I now have had a "trans fault" indicated, and was told to either get the transmission rebooted at a Jag dealer, or just drive it and the transmission will re-learn the new characteristics.
Any thoughts?

Do you have a way to scan the tcm (transmission control module) if the level is a little low it is likely to have a code "gear ratio" I believe it is 0730.

I took the car back to my mechanic and he scanned it. not sure what the code was. The fluid level is exactly the same as before the fluid change(he measured how much came out made sure the same amount went back in) I guess I'm wondering if a gearbox ECU reflash is required, or will the trans re-learn?

I would investigate. The fluid change obviously caused a problem, meaning it was done wrong. Get it to someone familiar with the tranny to find out. Changing fluid in the 6HP26takes some knowledge, temperature measuring tools and a special fluid. Chances are good that the fault is fluid level or type. Whe the fluid is changed in one of these, a knowledgable tech would change the pan/filter and electronics sleeve along with it.

Measuring the fluid removed is not the correct procedure to determine the level.

What ATF was used, and were the required procedures followed?

sorry for the confusion, yes the pan was replaced at the same time. My mechanic measured the fluid removed to be sure he was in the ball park when refilling, but used the warm up method as required to get the new fluid in and the right amount. I used the fluid recommended in the links on this forum and purchased the whole kit (pan, fluid, axtra bolts)
So, my question remains, does a reflash need to be done?

My recent experience is that the fluid level has quite a narrow tolerance: my guess is he under- or over-filled it. You can get a dip-stick from fleaBay for not much money and it's a good investment.

Don't know what good a re-flash would do if the fluid level is wrong.

Best wishes, Colin

It sounds like he followed the right procedure, there is no dipstick for the ZF box.

Maybe try a hard reset, failing that you probably need to get the codes checked to see what's showing up.

Not much we can help with until the codes are read and the correct fluid level is confirmed. Just as a note, removal of the pan/filter means that just putting back the same amount of fluid is not good enough since the old filter holds some fluid and the level may have been wrong to begin with. There is no code for low fluid, you have to know how to check it manually and/or interpolate the codes to detemine this.

thanks everyone for the imput. I'll let you know the results once the codes are read again. i guess a reflash to gearbox is not needed since nobody responded about that.

All fixed now. I took the car back and my mechanic went through the same procedure as before and found that about one cup on trans fluid drained out of the plug. that was all it took to bring everything back into "synch". No more codes, shifting is smooth as before but without the grunt.
