Default Trying to program garage door opener - any tips?

New xk8 owner here - trying to program my garage door opener to work with the built in opener button in the car. I have followed the directions in the owners manual exactly as described - twice. Still won't work. This is a newer chamberlin opener (3 years old) with a "learn" button. This type of opener is described in the owners manual but I can't get the procedure to work. Anybody have any experience solving this problem?

1. First train the button with remote.(simultaneously hold homelink/remote buttons until rapid flashing)
2. Push learn button on back of opener
2a. Run to car and push/hold trained button on homelink.
3. push button once/twice and garage should close.

Been successful on the programming by following the manual directions.
Caveat: I had to hold the button sequence down longer than just a "press button." 2-3 seconds each were required on the car pad. as noted earlier, the house unit (Liftmaster) had to have the "Learn Button" pressed as final phase. The car pad now operates properly, just have to press the button 2-3 seconds for it to activate.

Had to go thru the steps more than once to get mine to work. I also moved the car just outside the garage on the 2nd try to make it easier to reach the learn button. Don't know if that anything to do with it or not. Possible interference?

+1 on holding the buttons longer than implied in the instructions.

Just in case, go online for the your GDO manufacturer and see if their instructions are any different.

Totally agree with all here. The big think that gets most people is that the rolling code doors need a 2 step process-- pair from remote, and then gdo.

I never would have got that without the forum.

Finally got a chance to use your advice. I erased all previous programming first by pressing the two outside buttons. I can't seem to get past step 1 - when I press both the remote button and the button I want to program on the car I never get the "rapid flashing" that the manual suggests will happen. The car is inside the garage directly under the garage door opener - is that an issue?

I had the same problem. Eventually, I assumed that the Code was picked up even without the rapid flash. I then set up the opener in the garage to pick up the signal and was successful.

If you had a '97-99 XK8, your homelink unit would need to be swapped out because it wasn't rolling code. The non rolling code ones do exactly as you describe when you try to program them with a rolling code remote. But with a 2005 you should be good.

It can take multiple minutes to go to rapid flashing. If you have another remote, try to use that one, then train the opener to it. Also, put a fresh battery in the remote. "mini" remotes can "time out" during programming, so make sure you are using a full size remote with a new 12V battery.

Feeling pretty dumb here guys. Cannot get to program my garage door opener and have tried all your suggestions. FIRST, when I hold the remote and the Jag button, I get the blinking but then it shuts off....never get the fast blinking. SECOND, when I hit the learn button in my system, I cannot get the Jag control to program with it. Very frustrating!! Help please. Jaguar XJ 2012

Went back to using my 2 button remote which cost me $35.
Well worth it as I have been unsuccessful trying to get the car remote buttons to work.

I need 2 buttons because the Jag lives in a detached garage that has an electric door, then I need to get into the house that has an electric garage door.

The remote buttons are easier to locate and activate anyways!!

Thank you USCANAM....I did think about just getting another remote and calling it, period. And I guess I am about to....but perseverance is in my DNA so dont want to give up! Now I managed to screw up my other remotes (when I hit the learn button in my machine all remotes got unprogrammed), so not is is worst. Had to call the company that installed it. If they cannot program the Jag, will just then buy a new remote.

Check into a home link repeater, I needed one for my 02 XKR.

Despite being a model that should have worked, I could never get mine to sync either. Then about two years ago the garage door motor died and I had to replace it. Just for fun I tried to sync it up and amazingly it worked the first time.

New GDO or repeater as dieseldoc suggested.

If the Homelink isn't going to rapid flash, the training transmitter could be timing out. Most of the modern mini TX's time out to save the battery. If the TX has a 12V battery, you are probably good.

If it isn't timing out, Homelink recommends changing the distance and angle of the training TX to the Homelink device during the training process. If homelink doesn't go to rapid flash after 2 minutes. Start over with a different TX distance and angle to the Homelink.

If the Jag Homelink is newer than 2000, its rolling code. If the opener is newer than 2003, it should be rolling code. Rolling code Homelink should have no problem being trained by a rolling code TX, unless it times out.

I have a 97 MY and Chamberlain 3800 opener (bought in 2012) and have tried numerous times to get it to work with no luck. Bought a three button remote for my cars and left it at that.

'97 Homelink won't work with any opener made after about 2003. To even try, its not worth it.

Rolling code homelinks are cheap on Ebay. I bought one for $20 off Ebay and did some slight mods to swap it with my 1997 homelink

I got an instruction sheet from my local Overhead Door company that worked. It was a lot simpler than the Jaguar instructions in the owners manual that didn't work.

I think I noticed the Jag instructions don't tell you have to push the button on garage door after you've trained the homelink in the car.

On the older pre rolling code openers or DIP switch gate openers, you didn't have to do this step. Just train the homelink with the remote and the door/gate would magically open.

Between about 2000 and 2003 in the US when rolling code units were phased in, this didn't work anymore... except for DIP switch gate openers (because hundreds of people could need the same code for a "gated community" so rolling codes weren't used for these).

On the Car2U (homelink's competitor), for gate opener, you have to type the on/off DIP switch pattern into the in car TX to program it. It is not intuitive at all... So it could be worse.

I have a 2005 XK8 also and here's what I did.

First I moved the car outside in front of the shop garage, so I could use a step ladder.

Then I climbed on the ladder to reach the "train" button on the opener, pushed the button and went to the car and held the button I wanted (right one) until the rapid flash. Took three try's, before it worked--in that sequence--train button--button in car.

On third try it worked. (Would be much easier with two people)

At home with a very old sears unit, I took the units remote and sat in the car, held the old remote close to car unit, pushed the button on the remote and the button in the car (left button this time) at the same time. Held things like that until I got the flashing in the car.

Both work just fine.
Cheers
