Thumbs up Programming success

This is why I like this forum. As if I wasn't productive enough this weekend; oil changes, throttle body fix, top cleaned and protected, etc. I did a quick search on this forum and got my garage door opener working. A thank you to the collective, once again.

..Miata got the boot, now the garage is mine...

Tried to program my garage door until my arms were numb, then I decided to check the FAQ's. My '97 is a no go.

I have 5 garage doors and a gate, so swapping homelink modules is the cheapest option. Compatible rolling code models are less than $25 shipped on E-bay. Got mine for $20.

I have Homelink (or Car2U) in all my cars, and this one is by far the easiest. Swap takes less than 10 minutes including programming. I'll post pictures when my module comes in.

I spoke way too soon on the install. Though the new Rolling Code Homelink boxes are physically identical to my 1997 pre rolling code unit, the switches were taller in the old unit, so spacers needed to be added. It took about 20 minutes to install.

To remove the map light/homelink console, gently pull down. Its held in place by three spring clips (red circles). Remove the three Phillips screws (Blue circles) with a magnetic screw driver - so you don't lose them.

The Generic E-bay model/Original are externally identical:

The only real differences are in the flashing LED and the buttons are much deeper in the unit due to it being a Visor model. No problem. Pop off the homelink face plate with a flat screw driver wedge and use a razor to cut three spacers out of the button material:

Note I left a little of the oval to hold it in the holes during install.

What's left: from the buttons (tops and bottoms) with the "middle" being used:

Plug it in, reinstall and its ready to program.

Where did you get your "new" module and do you know what model and year vehicle it came from ?

You can buy them off E-bay for $25, or get them from the Junkyard for $10-$15. Most of the 2000-up "Visor" Homelinks will work with the button mod. Chrysler products, like 2000-2006 Sebring convertibles or 2000-up Land Rovers generally have XK8 style homelinks.

My '98 Xj8 has a "rolling code" 4 button model, so it appears its an early X100 problem.

Yes. The original cover snaps on. It can be a little tricky to remove / replace if the cover is baked and no longer flexible.
