Default U joint grease nipple

I was under the car today to grease the U joints and found that one of the rubber caps had fallen off resulting in the grease nipple getting blocked.

Does anyone know where you can get a replacement grease nipple and rubber cap?

Usually the "grease zerk" can be removed with a socket & extension and cleaned. The covers are are available on E-Bay USA and perhaps UK under "grease zerk covers" or google them. the Zerks (available in Standard thread and Metric) are usually able to be freed by proper fitting of grease attachment and forcing new grease through it. plastic covers work well also.

Just back from my local salvage yard, there wasn't a single jag there with the caps still on the grease nipples but have found plenty on ebay.

I'll try to clean up the existing one on there.

The GN was reasonably easy to access in this position, it unscrewed easily with a 7mm socket and extension bar.

Once on the bench I was able to clean it up and poke it in the end with a pick to free up the ball.

I was then able to pump grease through it no problem.

Back on the car, and all greased up!

Hey Racey,
Great that you got the problem fixed, but now I think it might be time to get a pressure washer cleaning in that area-------yuk!
I better look at mine also......
Hey, I notice your coat sleeve in the picture, is it getting that cold over there already?

Cheers

This area rends to get pretty grotty as grease is forced out of the U joint, I've never cleaned in there. And yes, the wind has turned round from the north so we are in for a cold week.

I thought the u-joints were sealed for life, at least that is what the manual indicates. Were the grease fittings installed later or a part of the factory setup?

Thanks!

Hi RaceDiagnostics, thanks for the great pictures. This is a job I'd like to do as well but I no longer have a grease gun. Are the UJ nipps. a particular pain to access (I only have jack/stands etc., no hoist) or will a bog-standard gun do the job?
I was thinking of this one:-

Many thanks, Andrew

The nipples are easy to get to you just may have to rotate the axle to get them in position for the GGun. No lift required jack N stand is fine. The link is very similar to what I've used... easy item of maintenance and often overlooked.
