Urgent: code reader for non-professional
I would like to buy a code reader for my Xk8 2000. One that will give me code fault information and be able to clear codes. I'm not an XK8 mechanic (but knowledgeable and an engineer) and i don't need bells and whistles. I'm having intermittent restricted performance issues and my mechanic is, i think, hunting and pecking to find the problem. It's back on again now just before Thanksgiving, after he pulled the plugs and degunked the cam somehow, saying that timing was off. The car has 100K on it, and it's time for me to get more knowledgable to ask the right questions now. It would be great to have one that monitored via wifi or blue tooth for I0S, but there are many types and i'm not sure if they work for XK8's or not. Appreciate the help soonest if possible. Thank you.

Now that the reader problem is solved: Have the timing chain tensioners been changed, at least the secondaries? If not this is a perfect opportunity to become familiar with your car.
But don't go back to your faithful mechanic, his comment about degunking the cam to fix a timing problem is pure BS.

Scan Gauge 2
I purchased a Scan Gauge 2 off e bay . Very pleased with operation. Easy plug and play into the OBD connector. Shows temperature and is a code reader. Can clear codes along with other functions, fuel economy, etc. Easy enough to read and clear codes while driving. I mean while stopped at a light. Rich

Msloescher.......If you should decide to go to a little more severe duty reader, there are plenty of them out there, for the do it your selfer, and as usual......they all come from China. The only thing I have found to be most useful on our cars, is a reader that also reads ABS codes. I don't necessarily care if it erases them, because our cars do that in a couple of drive cycles. Most of the readers out there will read all the other codes, but only a few will read ABS codes..........Welcome....and I am sure you will like it here........Mike
