Has anyone figured out how to replace Trunk CD Changer with something that gives you a USB port for a Thumb Drive and using original Cassette Radio for control.
I have read ... a long long time ago ... someone used the audio ports of the cassette head, soldered a 3.5mm plug + wire to it.
I forgot the details, incl. the part how to force the headset to think there is a cassette in it, but it might be worth googling.
I myself went the CD butcher way in my Vanden Plas, but I still should prefer the above.

I went the route that required zero alterations to the existing electronics. First I adapted the cassette to 3.5 plug then plugged that into a bluetooth receiver that I pair to my phone.
Next is to create an Android music player that will activate and start playing random tunes upon bluetooth connect. Then I'll just get in the car and if I want to hear music I turn on the cassette and my phone will already be playing my tunes.

While I had the radio out to fix some back lighting, I inserted a cassette with a 3.5mm plug, and led the cable through the radio housing backwards to an exit.
Then added a 10 dollar Bluetooth receiver I still had laying around, and fixed all up.
Finally, after reinstall, set the cassette player to NOT throw the cassette out if I switch off the radio.
Totally invisible solution.
So, I can play my music or internet radio over my phone, connecting through Bluetooth.
I just push the cassette button on the radio for that.
I am sure I loose some quality using such cassette converter, but frankly I don't hear the difference with my hacked solution in our Vanden Plas.
If you don't want to use the CD player anymore, you can hack into the wiring to it in the boot to get to the audio left/right wires - you can then plug any music source in you want. All the factory volume controls will still work, but you won't have any track select functionality.

I used this to get bluetooth music from a motorola car kit - so I've got handsfree phone interface, bluetooth music with track select from the remote and if no phone is connected to the motorola the CD plays instead.
