Have i read that the lifted lacquer on the veneer can be recovered with a heat gun? i know it works on faded plastic.

If its lifted I would think its fooko.
The best finish comes from two pack lacquer for car bodies not the **** in the tin. Problem is anything you spray it with may react with the original and you get a reticulated mess....fit a new set.
Also I have sprayed with slow set marine epoxy on wood.
