Default VIN number stamped on chassis ?

Does anybody know if there is a VIN number stamped on the chassis anywhere, or is the only ID the VIN plate above the firewall in the bottom of the windscreen ?

I want to scheck that the VIN displayed in the windscreen is actually correct and satisfy myself it's not been tampered with in the past.

Thankyou, your memory serves you well as that's exactly where it was. Happily it matches the VIN number on the windshield plate, so it appears my car definately has a 2001 chassis/body.

So why then does it appear to have a 1998 engine and ECU / wiring installed in it ? A big mystery - If I was to swap and engine I would be putting in a newer one not an older one - go figure.

Why do you say that it has earlier harness and ECM? Are you saying that it is an AJ26? The engine serial in an earlier thread clearly indicated it to be an AJ27. Where is the VVT control valve; front or top of the valve cover?

Any Jaguar dealer can pull a report using the VIN that provides the serial numbers for the engine and transmission as manufactured.

It is not unheard of to have a factory car registered late, it was very common quite a while back but I must admit a bit unusual for in the last decade..... I use to have a MK3 Triumph Spitfire which was made in 1970 but had a 1972 registration....

Let me have your last 6 digits of your chassis number and I will check it out if you like

Chassis number confirmed in two places, xxxxx16984 which matches the paperwork, engine number on the registration papers 001215xxxx, Engine number stamped on the block 971212xxxx. It looks like someone has changed the engine in the past, also the ECU has a label on it 079700 which I assume is a 1997 unit ?

In addition it has an old style throttle body with vacuum cruise control.
