Vmax restriction on US Jags

Vmax restriction on US Jags
We have a discussion these days here on the Jag forum germany regarding the v-max restriction of re-imported Jaguar vehicles from the US.
On these cars v-max is limited at about 200 km/h, compared to 250 km/h on ROW cars.
According to the affected people nobody including the dealership here around is actually able to erase this restriction.
We are wondering what (legislation?) may have caused the v-max limitation on us-jags.
Maybe you guys have a clue?
Thanks, Fritz

First, I'll make a "Vague Recollection" disclaimer.
Seems to me that, circa 2004-2005, Jaguar base model XJ8 sedans for the US market were equipped with xxx-brand high speed, performance oriented tires which were delivering very poor tread life. Owners were complaining about replacing tires at 10k miles. To quell the complaints, base model XJ8s for the USA market were fitted with longer-life tires carrying a lower speed rating. On these cars the speed limiter was set to [something like] 120 mph versus the previous 155 mph.
I don't recall that any of the sports models were so equpped.
Cheers

the "disclaimer" is probably expendable , because your explanation makes the most sense.
Indeed is seems that only the sedans are affected and that only partially. In addition, I´m not aware that this "issue" is known from other vehicle manufacturers except Jaguar. And somebody from the German Chapter assumed already that the restriction was done due to tyre related reasons.
So i guess there is strong evidence that the tyre explanation is close to reality.
Thank you all guys for your thoughts,
Fritz
