What is the cheap junk made out of?

Looks to be some kind of fiber based materially, it looks really eaten up around were the hose goes on.

Thermostat went bad and as I was replacing it, noticed that the outlet pipe was covered with paste like substance, as I started scraping it off, I noticed the pipe was bending under the pressure. So I need to replace it and I am going to do the pump and flush.
