These pumps have acquired a bad reputation largely due to the very early plastic impellers breaking.

Following cooling problems on two earlier V8's, I automatically bought new pumps. In both cases the pumps turned out to be OK when I removed them and the cooling problems were down to thermostat.

If in doubt, take it off and check. The only two issues could be impeller or bearing.

I thought you'd have already fitted the new thermostat and the water pump was a subsequent concern. Your thermostat must still be lying in some Royal Mail depot along with the indicator bulbs I've been expecting delivered for the last two days.

It is possible to check the pump is working without removing it. With a cold engine, remove the expansion tank filler cap then start the engine and run it at around 1200 rpm. The coolant can be seen circulating quite rapidly with swirling from the bleed pipe back into the tank. If the pump isn't working, there will be little or no coolant circulation and you won't see any swirl.

The swirl in the resivior may also be from the aux coolant pump which is electric powered and often overlooked. This pump will also make the swirling so I would not trust it completely
