Default What about an 2000 XKR?

Got an offer on a Black/Beige 2000 XKR Coupe with 50k miles for $14,000. Looked at the car today, although exterior body looks +/- Ok, interior, maintenance seems neglected. Check engine light on throwing code P1647, needs new tires and battery. For sure needs new tensioners. What else I need to consider in this model/year XKR?

$14k seems high for a 2000, regardless of problems. $12k is more reasonable for a 2000, in good shape; for what you describe, I'd say $10k is more reasonable.

If you buy it, then you'll own BOTH of the XKs in Puerto Rico. People will think you're a Jaguar dealer.

Well, not really Sam. If I buy it will have to sell the XK8. Don't have the space neither the money to maintain both.

If it was a local car, don't you need to worry about rust.

He must be pricing it based on the mileage but thats too much money in my world (Arizona) for a car needing what you say. Heck there is a 2000 XKR convert for sale here in AZ right now, one owner, every receipt, 75K and in perfect condition with the tensioners already done for 14K or best offer.

If the interior maintenance has been neglected, I think that the mechanical maintenance must be questionable. What is its service history? Another question is what, if anything, has been done to the tensioners, and is this a Nikasil engine which could be just about to start running into problems with worn engine liners (if the fuel has had high sulphur content at any time. I would certainly have the cylinders pressure and leak checked. The car may not have been loved; be really careful on this, whatever the price.

No service history. Tensioners are original, needs to be changed. Somewhere I read that if in the vin# the character # twelve is an A, it is a steel lined, not nikasil, vin # for this car is SAJJA41BXYPA02659, can anybody please confirm?

Code P1647 needs to be addressed, how difficult this will be? Needs new tires and battery, interior needs a deep cleaning, front seats and doors covers needs a color re-dye and the headliner fabric and A pillars needs to be redone. Asking price is $14,000, plan to offer $6,000, going up to no more than $8,000.

A02659, can anybody please confirm?

This is earlier than my car and would have Nikasil.

But a Nikasil Engine that has not been subjected to poor fuel is actually a better engine in the long run.

Thanks Paul, can you please confirm tensioners are plastic on these cars? Since is the same car as yours, what other mechanical issues should I be looking for? What about the water pump, thermostat, do they have plastic components as previous years and need replacement too? Any other word of advice from your experience with a 2000 XKR?

The Nikasil issue: I'm not an expert on this, but surely the longevity of the engine would depend upon the sulphur content in fuel purchased in Puerto Rico? I don't know if this would necessarily share the characteristics of fuel purchased elsewhere. Otherwise, yes, the Nikasil engine is more durable, but it really makes a proper test of the cylinders very important, as I said before.

The 2000 MY had "Plastic" Tensioners and I have changed mine to Metal.

The 2000 MY Water Pump has a Upgraded Plastic Impeller and is not known to cause problems.

I believe that the Thermostat is also more reliable and my car (at 35000 mi) has had no Thermostat problems. Others may have more miles and opinions.

Both of my Fuel Pumps went bad over winter several years ago. But this could be due to Ethanol Gas that is supplied in this area.

Both rear (Computer Controlled) Shocks were replaced under the original new car warranty due to one of them having a "Clunking" noise.

Also, the differential was noisy and replaced under the (Transfered) New Car Warranty.

Else, no problems for several years.
