even though lots of interesting thoughts and ideas are exchanged in this thread, something about its origin makes it worthy of being deleted. i propose that the moderator take a vote to delete the entire thread.

 

Like most of you, I feel I wasted an hour of my life reading through this ridiculous and mis guided thread. Sorry to say but, this guy is an F###ing tool and doesn't deserve the attention, advice and the recommendations given by this forums most valued contributors and loyal members.

OP, please go away and buy at Toyota Corolla and have a nice regular life in reliable mediocrity. Your opinions and requirements for owning a car of any kind are not one of an enthusiast.

I bought my XK8 for two reasons. Reason one is that I was looking for an interesting convertible. Reason two is that it is drop dead gorgeous. Reliability was not a major factor for me. I researched it a bit and it seemed to me that most of the potential reliability issues could be avoided with some preventative maintenance. I'm reasonably good with a wrench so I knew I could take care of any issues that came up as long as I found a well maintained low mileage unit.

Since it came up in the thread I'll throw my two cents in on the "Corvette Motor" issue. All I've got to say is why not? If I experience a catastrophic failure with my 4.0 I will seriously consider going that route. My car will be just as interesting a convertible and just as drop dead gorgeous with a GM LS motor under the hood as it is with the Jag motor.

 

Rotherham Jag Centre Monday night. 6 x X100's in. 1 gearbox, 2 abs failures, 1 plugs and coil packs, 1 AC compressor and 1 welding after an MOT failure. Happily none are mine 👍 . But mines in next week for a heating pump ❄ .

So my 2 cents, i have a 99 xk8 convertible with about 46,000 miles now, had it for three years and put 7000 miles on it. broke down once. this car was not properly maintained and had several of the usual failures covered under warranty like the top leak. i have put three rear view mirrors on it, a couple of used door locks, new rear speakers, cleaned out the car and took care of coil pack failures, fuel filter, new mass air flow meter, new bosh battery, service and coolant replacement, new water pump, thermostate, water coolant pipe with seals, fan belt, lots of hours messing with it, and about 3-4000 in maintenance deferred or otherwise. I love this car and never wanted a british car, also new brakes complete on all four wheels and new bridgestone tires...happy to find out about the ford dna for parts cost.

now compare this to me 2004 s2000 which cost new 1/2 what the jag was and is in fairness 5 years newer....all i have done,new dome light assembly, all...batteries fluids, filters, belt ,couple of valve adjustments , one set new brakes and one set of plugs...many sets of tires it has 81,000 on it. (orginal clutch) the honda is miles better in terms of reliability, performance handling with it's own style ....much better older car to have since new.; not even a light bulb....

but the jag has it's own place in my garage, style, it goes well and handles well and gives me that jaguar experience...so what if the jag is a bit of a mess , it's old and it is entitled to a few things going wrong now and then....so i trust it....

i would take my honda on a 400 mile round trip to lake tahoe, have several times...the jag i would drive 50 miles from home that's it

 

A week from today my '97 heads off on a 2000+/- mile tour of Upstate NY, New England and the Canadian Maritimes. I'm not going to worry about it.
