Default What's hiding under the ashtray?

I am needing to install a bank of USB charge connectors. I found a unit at Pep Boys that will make a nice looking installation after fabricating a fascia panel for a clean built in look. The fit, after removing the ashtray insert is remarkably close. The unit is however a little too tall so I need to cut the bottom of the center console at the ashtrays cavity where there is a step up on the passengers side. Can anyone tell me what might be under the plastic floor of the ashtray opening? Thanks.

Not a ton of space. Just wires. See below. No idea whats under the metal, but I wouldn't cut into that.

Thanks for the picture. It would appear that I can cut out the area below the ashtray and gain the space I need.

I had a very successful adventure today. Took lots of pictures and will add descriptions and post in in a day or two. The outcome was: I added 3 USB ports in the ashtray compartment and a cigarette type plug at 5v. The lid closes when unplugged. Stand by.

Hey taxman. I'll provide full details. My cat is a 2003 xkr vert. Other installations may vary!

Great news! Please post info & photos.

My solution was an adapter on Amazon* planning on it hanging behind in rear seat area... not an elegant solution.
Your plan sounds much better.
