Wiper motor is possessed - RESOLVED
Hi folks
Been suffering weirdness with the wiper motor since taking on this car ('97 XK8 coupe) three years ago, but it has suddenly become impossible to endure. Once started, the wipers will just keep on wiping no matter what position the switch is in. It used to be that cycling the switch up and down would reset the thing, but that doesn't work any more.
When in use, they are liable to park themselves in the fully-deployed position.
Have searched here and it seems to be a known problem, but mainly with the XJ8s which may have the same motor but different electronics/relays.
I presume the problem is a microswitch within the motor. How do I remove the motor, is it the three small nuts holding it to the plate ? Or does the whole shebang have to come out of the car ?
Thanks
Frank

Haven't removed the old motor yet, but dissected the new one in case anyone is interested:

Good news - the new motor is in and is working perfectly.
The microswitch in the old motor works just fine - must be one of the diodes or the capacitors that has gone wrong. Anyway, very simple job once the wipers and plastic cover are out of the way.
The motor is held in with three 10mm bolts, and the spindle with a 13mm bolt.
The only thing I'd say is to make sure the mechanism goes onto the spindle in *exactly* the same way it came off. First time I tried the wipers, the would dip down a half inch before performing a sweep. Easily fixed, but also easily avoided by marking the bracket position on the spindle

Good to hear you've got the wipers working again and excellent advice about marking the spindle positions.
I've added 'RESOLVED' to your thread title to help others looking for help with the Wiper Motor in future.
Almost tempted to take mine apart just for an excuse to buy one of those 'Irish Ratchet Spanners'.
