We have had an XJ8-1998 for few months. 66K miles, and appears to have been well taken care of in its past. Of course, there is always the timing chain tensioner issue to worry about, but, my wife has began to complain that you can smell fumes-like gaswhen the AC is running. At first, we thought it might be the car in front, but now that it has been persisting, we believe there is something odd with the AC.

Also, the rear ac blows out some odd black soot time material.


Anyone have any ideas on either?

Check your fuel lines under the hood. Not a common problem, but doesn't sound crazy either.

The rear vent is probably blowing some of the lining material from the vents. It's just something that happens with time.
