Default XK 8 stall and won't start.. Fueling issue

Hi all,

I'm a long time reader first time poster.

The other day I was driving along in my 1998 XK8 coupe about 50mph when I hit small pothole hard and the engine stalled directly after.

I pulled over and managed to get her going after 20mins but only for a minute or so and then she stalled again. So got her towed to my man.

Its in the Garage now they have checked the fuel cut off switch, the car starts and turns over when petrol is sprayed into the intake. until this petrol runs out then it dies again.

I've hear about the throttle body/ECU remap issues but I don't think its this.

So im thinking fuel pump and sure enough when they disconnected the hose from the pump and tried her no fuel at all came out.

they said the pump is making a sound so it seems to be trying to pump but nothing is happening, haven't done a pressure or voltage test yet they are probably trying that now.

Is there anything else I could be missing here? I'm going to order a new pump this afternoon if nothing else they try works, hes talking about bypassing the fuel cut off switch to see if this is at fault but if there is no fuel coming from the pump I don't see the point in this.

If it is the pump what is the best value pump to get? Do I have to go with an approved Jag one? I have heard of people getting after market pumps only to have to replace them months later.

I'm in Ireland so I normally get parts form a well know dealer in the UK seems to be a few different types for that year so I need to check my VIN number.

I've read going in through the back seat is an easier way to get the pump out rather than pulling the tank out.

Any opinions much appreciated? The sun is out over here I really want my JAG back ASAP.

I have read about instances where the fuel pump hose disconnected inside the tank. Hitting the pothole may have done that.

See if this no start procedure allows you to narrow it down to the fuel pump.

I told him to see if its the hose inside the fuel tank that's disconnected so they are going to check that in the morning, Id say it's either that or the pump is dead. Also sent him on those links...I think he had tried most of the list already and it does seem to be pointing to the pump not getting/not pumping juice.

The tank will be coming out so should be able to get to the bottom of why there is no fuel coming through the pump.

Good news is if I do need a new pump my local shop said they can get me one for under 70 euro.

Hopefully she will be running again tomorrow ... or as soon as they can deliver the pump if needed.... I'm driving a tiny blue Nissan micra to work... almost wanna take the bus!

Jag said they drop the Axle....any ideas?

In the coupe, the fuel pump can be accessed through the subwoofer openning. See https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...bwoofer-70631/

So got the new pick up pump in to the fuel tank and there is fuel coming out at the rail... 2 - 3 bars which I think is right around 40psi.

Tried to start her and still nothing.... one of the lads tested the injectors and they don't seem to be pulsing. so now were thinking a sensor is not working..... cam shaft position probably.

Put fuel in the intake and she started up again till the fuel ran out.

I need to get it plugged in and have someone with more experience with these cars have a look at her to know for sure.

Check fuse #5 in the engine management fusebox (UK passenger side of car under the bonnet near the firewall) AND fuse #5 in the engine comparment fusebox (UK passenger side of car under bonnet near front).

Also in the engine management fusebox press in all the relays (make sure none of the relays have come loose).

+1 on what white has said, but as you banged into a pothole it may be worth going around the car checking all relays, fuses and grounds.

Will recheck all fuses and relays in the morning, also haven't tried to start her in neutral yet to bypass that gearbox sensor.

There was no fuel coming from the tank and now there most definitely is so I'm stumped as to why she isn't starting now other than one of the sensors stopping the injectors from pulsing.

The plan tomorrow is to get her plugged in and see what codes are thrown out if the recheck of the fuses and relays doesn't fix it.

If you have fuel at the schrader valve then you have fuel to the engine. Is the engine when you start the car spinning like it lack compression? You can often tell by the sound of the engine turning.

Have fuel at the valve and the engine starts and runs when fuel is poured into the intake then stops when this fuel runs out so I have compression.... Probably not a good idea to do that much as it could wash the cylinders.

Seems like the injectors are not pumping fuel into the cylinders

You are saying that you have fuel pressure at the schrader valve?

Ok rechecked all the Fuses and relays ... still no joy. Have a mobile diagnostics fella on the way out to plug her in. He might also test the Key to see if its sending a signal.

Hope he can find out whats up with her.

Default She Lives!

Got her started and running car seems fine now.... First I checked pressure again had 42 psi... I held down the pedal and cranked her slowly releasing the pedal as she cranked..a few times, and she fired up and kept running,--- bit of a drive all seems fine now.

This morning I called the mechanic first and then one of my mates up in the garage and got him to recheck all the fuses and relays again... he found one relay in the Engine management box loose/barely on.

Now me and at least two other people have been messing with relays and connectors for the last few days ... immediately when the car died that's what i was checking for so maybe someone didn't insert that one back on properly... I also noticed it is hanging a bit to the side on its harness/clip.

My mate swears that the old pump was dead as he checked it both in the car and on the bench.

So I'm thinking pump died ... pump changed relay not on proper wont start then relay on proper and she finally starts.

Who knows I haven't had the ***** yet to take out that relay and test if it starts but i'm guessing she wont.

The diagnostics fella couldn't get and codes from the car, he suggested putting a better bosch pump in and checked the key was sending a signal.

Anyway 200 odd euro later and she is back on the road... and I'm a happy man.

Thanks for all your suggestions and help really is much appreciated life just doesn't feel as good driving anything else.
