Default XK8 2004 - solving microswitch problem, creating 3 new problems

Hi All,

I have been parasitting on your forum for a while trying to do the local Jag garage's job - the driver side window on my 2004 XK8 Coupe wolud not stay down. The garage proposed new door module, then new door latch complete with handle etc. - all rather expensive so I studied and asked them to change the microswitch!

They did the job yeasterday (USD 100 all inclusive) OK, the window does what it's supposed to do, but that's the good part!

Now, the drivers door does not lock when driving, it does not lock with the remote, the passenger door goes crazy opening and closing a few times till the alarm goes of and I probably forgot a few other related problems!

The garage did not disconnect the battery while replacing the microswitch.

Hope somebody outthere has an idea what to do - Jaguar in this country certainly doesn't!

Thanks for all your great threads, enjoy them a lot, actually considering becoming a hobby mecanic.

Jagples try disconnecting your battery or a hard reset. A lot of times that will clear up a lot of electrical problems.

HARD RESET PROCEDURE:

1. Ignition OFF.

2. Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.

3. Turn key to ignition ON position.

4. Touch disconnected NEGATIVE terminal of battery to the still-connected POSITIVE terminal for 15 seconds or so.

4. Turn ignition back OFF.

5. Reconnect NEGATIVE terminal to battery.

Then start her up and see if things are better. Note that you should also make sure your battery is at FULL STRENGTH.

Note that anytime you disconnect the battery, you must reprogram the windows. With the doors closed, raise each window to the top and continue to hold button until you hear a faint "click," about an additional 3 seconds. Then lower each window to the bottom and continue to hold the button until you hear the same "click." Voila, you've reprogrammed the windows.

OK, I actually managed to fix the problem before reading this - next time I will read first and work later, and maybe save some time! However I found a path that worked - maybe not a straight line, but here is what I did.

Disconnected the battery!

Removed the door panel and checked all connectors, and what do you know - the garage left the connector to the door latch "not quite connected!

Put everything back together, connected the battery and them came the exiting moment - did it help?

Well, the passenger door handle stopped opening and closing when I used the fob, probably because the fob now only "turned on the alarm" and nothing else, no doors locking, nothing, and the fob couldn't even disconnect the alarm, but it didn't matter, I just had to start the car, and the alarm indicator stopped blinking! The doors also stopped locking when setting the car in R or D, and when I opened the drivers door, the message on the dash board would read "Passenger door open".

So, I pulled all the fuses relating to door locks and door modules, put them back in and - abracadabra - now everything works!

PYH, I was affraid of having the car sitting in the garage like my old Daimler XJ40 that spend 6 weeks in a garage in Italy while they while they tried to fix a print circuit for the fuel pump!

All the best, thank you for great advice, have a great summer

Good result on the troubleshooting.

AutoLock feature isn't necessarily a fault. Depending on market, this can be activated or deactivated by a Jaguar Dealer. My 2000 XJ8L had it activated. All doors locked as soon as forward or reverse was selected.

This is an option in the UK. I understand there are some markets around the World where it is prohibited and others where it's mandatory.

I am no master electrician, but wouldn't connecting the negative terminal to the positive terminal short the wiring.

I understand your thoughts on that, but it's official Jag procedure.

You are NOT "Connecting the Battery Negative Terminal to the Battery Positive Terminal".

You Disconnect the CABLE from the Battery Negative Terminal and Touch the disconnected CABLE to the Battery Positive Terminal.

After 15 Seconds, you re-connect the CABLE back onto the Battery Negative Terminal.

What Paul said. When you disconnect the negative lead from the battery, the battery is isolated from the chassis. Then, touching that negative lead to the positive terminal allows all of the capacitors to discharge through the positive wires of the car, back to the positive terminal, and then straight to ground through the negative lead which you are touching to the positive terminal.

Thank you for the kind words and help - particularly to Reverend Sam, I found your tutorial video on removal of the door panel extreemly helpfull.

I have to admit that the "hard reset" procedure made my eyebrows go up about as high as they can, but I see the point and will definately keep the advice in the drawer for next time!

Thanks againi

Default Microswitch issue

I just bought a 2004 XK8 Convertable. The drivers door window does not stay down when closing the door. Took it to the dealer and they said the microswitch in the door latch is bad and wants to replace the door latch assembly for $1,200. I know the dealer is high, and am looking for a local independent repair shop, but do you have to replace the entire latch, or can you replace the switch?

There's a thread in the Section How-To's about using (I think) a $7 Radio Shack or similar switch.

Yes, but that didn't work. After doing some more research I found out that a bad switch can cause the interior lights to not come on when you open the door and that is also happening.

The switch is available as a seperate item! Best to get it from the dealer!
Maybe you should quote the dealer from this Jaguar service bulletin! Part number and fitting instructions inside the pdf.

I watched the video on how to change the door latch and it seems easy enough. Now, does anyone know where to look for a door latch without having to go to the dealer. I am new at this, so dont know all the places to find parts yet. Appreciate any help.

Thanks, but it looks like it does not apply to a 2004, only 97 XK

all the microswitches and door latches are the same across all the 97 thu 2006 models. You're safe using the TSB bulletin posted by Stumpy.

Thanks to all. I found the assembly at www.conventrywest.com. They sell new and used Jaguar parts. They had one for $200.00.
