Looking up the part number for a replacement XK8 ashtray gives GJA7640CB whereas the XJ8 part shows GJA7640CA. Some internet sites indicate that a single part will fit both models of car and the photos appear to be identical. But if they were the same, why the different part number?

Does anyone have any direct knowledge of whether an XJ8 ashtray can be a direct fit into an XK8?

The main thing to consider is the first group of letters and then the following numbers, if they are the same, its the same part. The last group is to do with a major change to the car such as a facelift. There could be cosmetic changes to the part but it will still fit, or more often, it is exactly the same part. I had the same with a replacement radio facia for an XK8. The original part ended AA, the replacement was BA, it was exactly the same, later the part became CA.
