I've been chasing P1384 and P1396 Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) AJ27 engine after replacing the chains, guides and tensioners. Seems to be a common occurrence. The advice so far is do electrical checks of the VVT solenoid, the VVT, cam timing, reluctor position, etc. I've read, what I believe are all the posts about the DTC codes and VVT issues had by all. All seem to have resolved their P1384 and P1396 DTCs but with out a definitive answer as to exactly how fixed.
I have the all the manuals - at least I think I do. The latest reviewed was XJ and XK Series 1999 Model Year Update July 1998. It shows an illustration on page 7 of the
Cam shaft N/A engine sensor ring and one for the SC engine sensor ring. A four tooth sensor ring is fitted to the inlet camshaft of both cylinder banks on the 4.0l N/A engine.
It doesn't show how its positioned on the cam. On an earlier AJ27 engine (reference SB 308-08) shows an adjustment method to move the reluctor in its correct position on the cam.
I guess at this point - before I throw in the towel - to get a few opinions. Please take a look at the photos of my passenger side cam reluctors and tell me if they are positioned correctly. 1999 XK8 Passenger side cam.
Thanks for responding. I locked it all down with the special tools a few times and took out the slack. I’m checking all that again. That’s why I’m perplexed.
I thought I was pretty careful the last time I had the front cover off locking and pinning. It should be straight forward I thought. If that is what eliminates the codes I’ll do it again. Thx!
