Default XK8 Convertible Top dead!

I have a 1997 XK8 and while trying to open the top the othernight it quit about 1/4 of the way down. I then tried to close it and it moved down but did not latch which is where it is stuck today. When I press the button to open/close the top the bell doesn't ring or anything and all I hear is a "clicking" sound in the trunk as if a relay is working but not the motor?

Any idea on a prognosis?

Ken,
Welcome to the wonderful world of owning a Jag! The car in motion is not a problem and for you not to think about it. As for the roof and windows now I would say it is a bit confused. First stop pushing the open and close button, go into the trunk at the pump and open the petcock to release the hyd pressure in the system. With this valve open pull the roof closed then take the allen wrench that is attached to the platform of the pump and lock the roof closed. Once your roof is locked closed go back to the pump and close the petcock and then look at the level of the hyd fluid. If it is low you will need to fill it. After it is full put the key in the car and CLOSE the top. You should hear the rams lock and once they do the windows will go up.

Default Fixed!

Gus was a huge help, thank you!

my top was locked in the "up" position about 1/2" from being able to be grasped by the locking mechanism on the windshield frame. Gus walked me through turning the pepcock counter-clockwise at the pump to release the pressure and then releasing the top from its locked position on the right and left side just above the rear seats where the piston meets the frame. This allowed me to lower the top all of the way. After that, I raised it and locked it manually with the allen wrench and then tightened the pepcock back up. After the system "reset" it began to work with the use of the button as normal.

Need to top off with hydraulic fluid as it is low and was most lilkely the culprit in the first place in getting the top stuck.
