XK8 electrical problems
i Have now bought an xk8 1996 which i knew had an electrical problem and am now trying to sort it out.it was tested by the local dealer before i bought it and they say that voltages to starter ok , rcm and can ok, and substituting bpm earth then powers starter bpm internal earth has failed. the previous owner has purchased a replacement bpm but the original bpm is LJB2500AD and new one is LJB2500AF are these interchangeable and if so how to reinstate programming. all other electrics are working ie roof , windows etc and lights on dash ok it just will not start. ANY HELP GREATLY APPRECIATED

fyi did you check these fuses?
Ignition Switch at CRANK Position: When the ignition key is set to the crank position, the following sequence occurs:The BPM 'CRANK SELECTED' terminal is taken to 0V by the ignition switch. The BPM 'O/P ENGINE CRANK' terminal provides a path to ground for the starter relay coil, via Fuse 5 (10A) located in the under bonnet fusebox. This path to ground also indicates to the ECM 'I/P ENGINE CRANK' terminal, by taking it to 0V, that the engine has been requested to crank. With the starter relay contacts closed, power via Fuse 3 (25A) in the engine management fusebox, is supplied to the pull-in winding of the starter solenoid. The solenoid main contacts close and are held closed by the solenoid hold-in winding.Battery power is supplied to the starter motor through the solenoid main contacts, direct from the battery and the High Power Protection Module.
While probably not your problem just double check the inertia switch,
The inertia switch, when operated, disables the ignition system and fuel pump, releases any locked doors and switches off unnecessary electrical systems. The inertia switch is located next to the fuse box at the left-hand end of the fascia. To reset the switch after it has been activated, the rubber cap on the top of the switch is pressed down.

I'm pretty sure the transponder key is a dealer only option - it has to be programmed to the car. Photo shows where the little "transponder chip" is fitted to the key.
Headlights are available from Ebay / breakers etc. There's Catkiller (Trevor), SimplyPerformance and Eurojag in the UK, all of whom are worth a call. The headlight comes in two parts - if you *just* have a cracked glass, you don't need the whole lot. But - if buying new (look on the S N G Barratt site for example) - prepare to take out a second mortgage !

If you paid 1996 price for a 2003 car, it's probably worth having a few teething problems !
It's not 100% proof of anything BUT - look at the engine number on the V5.
e.g. Mine is (was) 9705210400 which means it was built at 0400 on the morning of21st May 1997.
If the first two numbers are 96 - that's probably when your car was built. It may have had a new engine since then, but unlikely that the V5 has been changed.
Cheers,
David.
