Default XK8 Fuel gauge problem

My 1997 XK8 convertible's gas gauge always shows empty with "low fuel" warning light on. How can I test the system? Sending unit is accessible with a blk/wh wire and a Brn/wh one. Appears Blk/wh is the power lead. Can I jump between them to test or do I need a resistor?

Default Fuel Gauge issue

Finally got a chance to test the electrical for the fuel gauge. Used the JagRepair method, but only used one 470ohm resistor. That jumped the dash gauge off empty, cancelled the low level warning light and brought the gauge up to about 1/4 fuel level. Of course I refilled the tank just before finally determining that the sending unit was bad. Now just have to drive another 300+ miles and look for the replacement sending unit.
Thanks for the useful diagnosis help.
