Default XK8 Oil Change Question

My 2006 XK8 is recently out of its Select Edition Warranty. I let the dealer do oil changes while under warranty. I do oil changes on all of my other cars by myself. The oil is now due for a change. I have actually never looked under the car. Is it any more complicated than loosening the drain bolt, draining the oil, removing the filter, replacing bolt and new filter, and adding 8 quarts of 5w30? Do I need a Jag oil filter or will one I buy at Pep Boys do a great job? Thank you. Jack

Not complicated. There is a small shroud to remove for better access to the filter. The oil filter has to have a check valve to prevent oil draining back when the engine is shut off, and it's possible some of the cheaper filters do not have the valve. Use the search function to read up on what others have reported.

Also, no real need to change the pan bolt. I've done 10+ oil changes on my car with the same drain bolt, and not a single drop has leaked at that location.

I've had good results with the NAPA FIL 1228 GOLD oil filter...made by Wix, and has the valve to prevent backflow.

Agreed. Easy access once you remove the alternator cooling plastic air duct (held on by one 7mm bolt) if yours is still present. The oil pan drain plug is 13mm. I've used Purolator oil filters in all of our vehicles since the early 1980s and have no complaints. I buy them at Pep Boys, Advance Auto Parts, or Autozone when they go on sale and keep a stock on my garage shelves. Same with the conventional Castrol 5W30 oil I use....

While you're underneath the car, take your 8mm box wrench with you and snug up the two ZF shift cable attachment bolts on the drivers side above the pan. They tend to loosen up over time on many of these six-speed ZF units. Don't be surprised if you have to tighten them a quarter to a half turn each. I do this at every oil & filter change (6,000-mile intervals for me). Sometimes they need snugging up, sometimes they don't. Better safe than sorry - if they fall out, you're stuck in whatever gear the car happens to be in when the bolts finally disappear....
