Default XK8 Overheating

This is a follow up to a previous post of mine.

After 10 minutes of driving my 97' XK8 the temperature shoots up to red and I believe the transmission goes into "limp" mode as it no longer wants to shift into higher gears.

There is no water leaking from the engine so how can I ascertain that it is in fact the Thermostat that is the problem? If I bring it to an auto parts store and they hood it up to the diagnotic macjne will that diagnose it?

You can remove the thermostat and put it in boiling water to see if it opens fully.

For the price of a thermostat, you may just want to put one in there. 4.0 thermostats are junk.
