Default XK8 Won't Start

Hi,

I recently replaced my battery in my 2000 XK8 Coupe following a long period of the vehicle left standing. However, the vehicle will now not start. The first time I tried it, all my electrics decided to freak out with interior lights flashing intermittently and the windscreen wipers going, despite the stalk being in the off position.

I've tried rebooting the ECU and now every time I turn the ignition key to II all the warnings come up on the display. I've also checked every fuse and they're all ok. When I turn the ignition key nothing happens and after a couple of attempts an audible 'beep' comes on for about 10 seconds.

Any ideas?

Just something to try. Remove the battery cables, touch and hold the cables together for approx. 30 secs. Then connect the cables to the battery, and try to start the car again.

Thanks gatekeeper,

Just tried that but unfortunately, still experiencing the same problem - it's cycling through all the faults on the onboard computer which I understand it does until you re-programme the codes following a reboot. Nothing happens when I turn the ignition to start.

Sorry it didn't help. I thought that might reset it. Not familiar with your car, I have nothing more to help you. Someone that is will probably chime in. Keep checking back. Good luck.

Can you clarify...is the starter turning the engine or not?

Sorry, one more question...had the car had a jump start attempted with the dead battery?

I am not sure if you are aware, but the car actually has five fuseboxes: One on each side of the dashboard, one in the trunk and two in the engine compartment. There is a small one in the engine compartment near the ECU, which is under the cover near the windshield on the passenger side. A lot of people are not aware of this one.

Find this small fusebox and check in particular fuses # 3 and #5. If those are OK, go ahead and check all the fuses in this box.

Also, on the driver's side of the dashboard please recheck fuses #5 and #18 carefully.

All fuses checked and all seem to be ok. Fuse no3 in the smaller box was blown but I'd already replaced that.

If fuse #3 blew, that strongly suggests an issue with the starter solenoid and possibly damage to the stater relay as a result.

Do you have the relay diagram ? You might try swapping the starter relay with a less important one, like one of the wiper relays. I would caution that if the starter solenoid is shorted it could damage this relay also.

Have had this problem intermittently for several years. Happened last week,
All indicators lights everything works won't turn over.

Got 10 beeps every time the key was turned on, No Trac, No ASC, Transmission Fault, Engine Fail Safe. This has happened time and time again, wait 15 minutes and it starts, might be fine for months, weeks or days never know.

I did try to sync the OBD11 but would not link. Been 3 days and all is working fine. Did link the scanner, no codes.

And we still just love these cars.

It could be your transmission selector switch. I would try to start it in "N" position and see what takes place. The shifter cable has been known to go out of adjustment.

I am not understanding your statement here. Have you attempted to read the codes with a OBDII code reader? If you have could you post the codes?

Hi Gus,

No I haven't read the codes, just the on board computer fault messages.

Tried this Gus, but it won't shift out of P into N
