I really hope your wrong. If the problem is the dreadedNikasil it wouldn't have failed all at once. It should have been burning oil,and the compressions wouldn't be so consistant. This car ran perfect up until it didn't run at all. Since it won't start, I can't get a vaccuum reading. I'm still sticking with valve timing --- I hope. Of course the shop has been closed since Thanksgiving. I'll keep you posted.

I didn't think '01's were subject to the Nikasil issue.

OK! Got it started. Big props to Craig Nelson, owner of "The Jag Shop" in Portland OR. I called to check my car into his shop and he told me what was wrong. It seems to be very common in '97 & '98s. Evidently when you start the car and don't let it warm up, the next time you start it, it goes into a flooded condition and won't start. He says because of the soft liners there is very little ring pressure. He told me to squirt an ounce of motor oil into the spark plug hole, spin it over and install new plugs. I did, and it started right up! It smoked like hell for a while, then calmed down. Now its fine. Make a note Jag Gurus.

Believe it or not guys, I'm extremely happy that I was WRONG then. Glad your car is running and thanks for the advice. Who's this person that you called?

The guy's name is Craig Nelson. He runs a garage in Portland OR. called "The Jag Shop". His shop is full enough that he has no problem helping me with technical problems like this. I've only had my car in his shop once, when they changed my valve-cover gaskets. He was only 1/3 the price of the blood thirsty dealer in town. It's always great to find a good repair shop.
And its great to find a forum with so many helpful people. Even if they are sometimes full of ****. I never would have taken the compression readings if not for the Nikasil scare. So all-in-all it did help.
Thanks to everyone who participated.

You're right J-G. Unfortunately holding the throttle down wasn't quite enough to make this cat purr.
