Question XKR - 2001 - leaking engine oil -advise please - RESOLVED

Hi All,

anyone know what could be the problem? my XKR 4.0 l engine is leaking oil here..(see pic) not much, but a few drops are on the ground every time I parked, topped up half a liter to max level since last oil change in May.

all idea's/suggestion are welcome - thanks!

XKR 4.0 L - leaking oil here at the center of the photo. I tighten the bult to the cats from the other side, but still leaks some..

It could be a cam cover gasket, but I doubt it. Wipe around the back of the covers to check.

More likely the rear main seal. There's a socket head screw that seals an oil gallery just above it that sometimes leaks, but the fix is no easier because the transmission has to come out for either one.

You can try adding a product like Lucas oil stop leak, but that's only going to be a temporary fix.

I was thinking rear main seal leak as well. For your sake, I sure hope it turns out to be something far less expensive and easier to get to....

many thanks for Your feedback and replies - I will monitor it for a while, if it increases then need to fix it at a local shop, it has never ever leaked before, I just hope its not the rear main seal.

Yes - I found the problem, I simple topped up to much oil, its over max on the oil stick, so its simple pushing some oil out..do not know why I read the level wrong, maybe the car was not in level, anyway - all good - have a nice weekend.

Good to hear it was only excess oil and not a rear seal.
