Default XKR Buyer Advice Please

My 2000 XK8 was totaled from a flood, so I'm looking for an XKR - would like to buy 2002-2006. I like that body style, but could consider 2007 if there is overwhelming advice to get into the new model. What should I be looking for? What breaks in these vehicles? Is the CAT system standard in the XKR? Do I want to avoid the CAT system? Certain years better than others? All advice is appreciated ! And do I have a deal for you on an XK8 ......

Glad to see that the insurance company totaled that car. The electronics are enough of a pain as is without dealing with major issues 1, 2, 3 years from now.

From what I am seeing the '03 to '06 are the models to get. They have the 4.2 engine which is considerably better than the 4.0L. The only thing that I am not sure of is whether or not the ZF 6 speed trans is as reliable as the Merc 5 speed in the older models. The one thing I do know is that it drives beautifully. The 6 speed is wonderful, it selects the gears so nicely that you hardly know it is shifting and it always seems to be ready for your next move. The Merc is bullet proof, but is not as smooth.

After many months' research, I went for an August 2005 XKR coupé, one of the very last first-genereation models built. If you can afford it, it's a no-brainer, IMHO, since as many of the production glitches as possible will have been ironed out. Jaguar also threw in practically all the previously expensive options for 'free', as they were phasing out production in readiness for the second generation, which look nicer, but are significantly more expensive, at least here in Europe.

Default CATS system on XKR

Do all XKR's have the CATS system or was it an option? Is it fickel and fraught with trouble or an asset to have?

James
I don't know about 98 or 99 XKR'S but I think all after 2000 have the cats system. I've never had had any problems or have read of any on the forums. The biggest complaint I've seen has been the cost of the shocks, but a lot of owners have just replaced them with regular shocks with no ill effects.
