On my XKR, the hood liner has worn the paint away from one spot of one of the intercooler charge coolers at the top of the engine, and also shows wear marks against some of the top charge cooler hoses.

All the hood liner fasteners are in place, and the liner does not appear to sag, but there is a small airspace between the hood and the liner.

I have seen photos of this happening in others XKRs besides mine. Any thoughts or solutions would be appreciated. I would like to repaint my charge coolers, but not until this problem is solved.

Yours isn't the only one, I've got one spot on the left front. I've noticed an almost every supercharged engine bay I've seen there seems to be a spot and not always in the same area. I was wondering if the factory finish was anodized. on the coolers.

I've cut the centre section of the liner away, this effects 100% of XKRs I have ever seen and hoping this will solve the problem I will let you know how I get along.

The guy I am going to do this for is spending over $3000 having his engine detailed with polished parts, strut caps and braces and a full silicone hose set so the last thing he wants is to see parts of it rubbed away

 

Although I don't know from personal experience, I have seen good things written in the forums about these hood liners.

there was a guy doing them for the x-type for $150 IIRC, and I was supposed to get him a template for the xk8 series, but never followed thru. It would give you just a little more room, maybe 1/4" if it were tight against the sheetmetal.

 

Humm...it's a minor detail in the big picture but a pain nonetheless. I had that happen to mine. What I noticed first was that the driver's side hood latch had either let the hood go or it didn't latch properly when I last closed the hood. The latter is unlikely and the hood rising up and still melting the liner seems counter intuitive but that's what happened. My liner melted on top of one little spot of the SC and when removing the debris I took the paint off. I'd like to try and retouch the paint. Anybody got a plan for that?

 

I actually know the guy that does those headliners (he started on the T-bird/Cougar forums and I used to own an '87 Cougar) They are very high quality and are pretty thin.

Also, just to note, this isn't only limited to XKR owners. One of the intake runners on my XK8 rubs on the liner as well.

 

Mine is an 03 XKR and I don't know squat about hood liners or the materials they are made of but common sense tells me the damn thing Should. Not. Melt. Piece of crap and poor engineering in my opinion. If there is a replacement I'd like to know about it.

I'd also like to buy some super charger paint. The more I think about it the madder I get.

 

It's funny but right after I bought my 2005 XKR I had noticed a very minor spot on one of the high-spots of the intercooler boxes and quickly figured it must be the hood liner making contact. It was almost unnoticeable so I was embarrassed about posting anything about this issue but it looks like there are others here who are just as **** as me (what a relief).

I have just email Gonzalo (the hood liner guy) about a possible bulk buy for the UK. I am waiting to hear back from him to see what he needs to produce them and hopefully we all might have a solution for this hood liner problem.

 

I just scraped away a little of the hood insulation material so it doesn't make contact any more. If you're careful about removing the hood insulation, you can hardly notice it and its clean.

 

racer, if you need a template provided to gonzo to make that happen, I'll make the effort for you...since you're way over there and it would be rather inconvenient. Just send me a PM or reply here.

 

Why not just remove the hood liner altogether. The BMW guys do it all the time on Z3s and 4s as it interferes with strut braces and engine covers.

 

I guess it could be an option but personally I like the look of liner and let alone that if you have ever looked behind one you will notice Jaguar are not exactly liberal with the paint behind there

Yes, I agree with you, that's a downside. I'd still rather look at a crappy hood back than have my engine detail damaged.

I've a black BMW, so when I removed my hood liner the black still looked black. Some of the other BMW owners with colors like White, red, for example, don't look as good.

 

I have been in touch with Gonzo (the liner guy) and I will be sending him a template, so it wont be long before he can produce liners for all

Thanks for offering to help Matt (h20BOY) I think it will be easier if I just send him a template that way you dont have to be put out or have to remove yours to make one as I have a liner on the floor here.

Glad to have almost helped out. Now I'll have more time to clean the car this weekend. I tell you what...I'll order one when they are in production. Gonzo has got to be tired of waiting on me anyhow...

 

Personally I think silver would look good on a black car or maybe red if you had a red silicone hose set to match it in
