Default XKR tilt wheel not tilting

Just picked up mu 06 XKR in Houston - steering wheel has full in/out, but only tilts up/down about a quarter inch and it's stuck in the very up position and that's not good.

Any hints - the owner's manual doesn't add much - just adjust it when you're in park.

Thanks !

Very common problem in these cars! The rheostat in the tilt motor circuit gets dirty/pitted. It is part of the tilt motor assembly. Sometimes you can get it to work by manually moving it with the switch by continually bumping the switch in the same direction. If it does move, continue moving it up and down and it may temporarily work. The motor assembly is not hard to replace, just expensive.

My 97 I played with the up and down today. Thought that it is not used much that I should STRETCH its legs some. Well it went up fine then down fine but I noted it was not going up and down very far, not what I though tit should so I kept hitting down on the round thing, bumping it and it would go down some then bump up some but still was not doing a full range of motion so I would bump switch and gently push on wheel the direction I was going after a few times of that each way the wheel was going up and down fine all on it's own. Perhaps it was not working right cause frankly it prob has not been moved in over a year and needed a little nudge to get moving. Frankly the wife and I never use anyways, it has been in a good spot for years.
I think it is yet another moving part of these cars that unless you use them time to time they are ganna act up or BREAK.

My 99 did the same thing and it hadnt been driven hardly for the year before I bought it, would only bump a little, but after several days of playing with it and bumping it, it began to work smoothly. There are a number of things on the car that seemed to need some exercise and are now fine. These cars don;t like to be ignored.

Mine works fine in warm or hot weather. When it's cold it stutters and you need to press several times. Apparently there is a flat washer that is too stiff. Here's the thread on a 'fix'.

Default Bumping worked

Bumping it worked - must've been in the same position for some time - after several jiggles up and down, it started working again. Says something that cars and their systems need regular excercise.

Thanks for the tips !

Give it time. It will stop working again shortly. Mine started off fine, but now I have to "bump" it down about 6 times to get it to the right position. I'm going to try Mish Mish's repair in the near future.
