Unfortunately the secondary chain is now STRETCHED. When the plastic 'shoe' gets between the chain and sprocket, it stretches the chain. The normal consequence is a rattle that the tensioner cannot cure. The chain gets looser than the tensioner can compensate for.

When ever the chain is stretched or broken, I always replace the chains.
If you have to pull the timing cover, then just do all the timing components.

I don't trust a 'stressed-chain'.

Motorcarman, Thanks for the input. I was concerned about stretch as well. I applied tension to the chain when I verified the flats of my cams were lined up. I also "measured" the slack by comparing to the drivers side chain while the tensioners were out.

3 things in my favor..(hopefully..)
  • The chain has a fair amount of slack when new (at least that appears to be the case based on my examination of the drivers side).
  • It wouldn't take much to clear the tooth.
  • The loads on the chain are light as its only job is to drag around the one exhuast cam.
If any stretch did occur, it may have been within the chains region of elasticity. Either way the chain did endure some added stress that it wasnt designed for.

So far all is quiet. I will, as you suggested, replace all the chains the next time I open the timing cover and will keep an ear out for any tell-tale noise in the interim.
