Bob,
Great job.
Not sure if you know this, but flash drives should not be defragged. It does not help with performance and wears them out prematurely, as each memory segment has a limited number of write cycles before it fails.
Best regards,
John

Noted.......... but I will still defrag before I clone a few. I want a good copy of a fresh install. At less than $15 a piece, I can toss a CF once a year as a cost of doing business.

I have three 8gb CF with adapters and about 5 regular 2.5" HDDs with Jaguar 43. Windows 98 is NOT the most stable operating system. It's easier to swap HDDs than to mess around trying to recover a crash.

I also have a few HDDs with Ford just because....

Hi all,

sorry for not responding ealier, but my internet is down since Christmas due to some cable problems and they will have to open the street as by now six houses are affected. So my replies will be now and then.

So CF-card works perfectly with me, too. the only thing I realized that the boot menu appears everytime with 1. Normal 2. protected Mode ....
As I do not want to wait the default 30 seconds I changed the waiting time in the TweakUI (control panel) to 5 seconds.

The PCMCIA-card arrived too, but installing the default driver of Win98 froze the system. Actually it is said to work with Win98SE, so I am really looking forward to the Upgrade-CD.

Bob, do you have a FTP-client - such as FileZilla ?
I could give you the credentials of a folder on our web page.

And John is right concerning the defragmentation on the CF-card. It is the same as with a SSD. No movement of the reading head - just bits and bytes in a permanent RAM.

The actual status of my project so far is:
1. PTU is running fine without limitations
2. PTU has a graphic problem. Screen is dark ans does not respond. External monitor however shows everything correctly.
3. PTU has a power problem. One capacitor literally burned through, possibly because another one on the instrument board loosened. I will have to solder 2 new ones in and hope that was all - but I fear there might be something more.

Best regards
André

André
You can send a Personal Message to me with a site to upload the Win98SE upgrade image. It is an .iso image.

All 3 of my CF cards load and operate normally.

Hi Andr'e,
about the ptu screen being blank and the monitor working, i had a similar problem a little while back but my ptu did light up, just lit up nothing showing but otherwise working through external monitor so this proves the graphic card is working allright.
I found out that my problem was that the ribbon cable between the screen and the main circuit board had somehow become loose and had only made half contact , so all i had to do was reposition the ribbon (think it was helped by glue gun) back into it's socket and Voila! a working ptu again. Not saying that it will be your problem but is worth a look eh.
regards
rrosscoe
ps
still messing with my 203 cable

Hi rrosscoe,

thought of that, too.
So I put my working Mainboard and back to front Panel and started - everything was working fine. Even with the same short ribbon and plug.
So it must be definitely on the Mainboard. When I exchanged the Illumination Controller (which seemed to be burned on the 2nd PTU) the Screen even turned White - but nothing else.
So I will Need some diagnosic unit to check this diagnostic unit :-D.

Cheers

Andr'e
Not having much luck then, does sound to be something more than loose cable but as it does work on external monitor it narrows it down to screen and as it lights up (like mine did with nothing else) then the screen driver circuit seems to be working just not getting the correct signal, does the touch screen work, as you should hear it beeping even with nothing on screen (as mine did)
Best of luck

It will not be reckognized by the BIOS.

BUT - putting in a 16GB CF-Card it did not complain and started right away. THAT was queer.

I know, BIOS has limit at 8.4 GB and i presume that BIOS looks at the entire physical drive en not the partition.

Does IDE adapter to CF works as well ? Cause HDD 6.4 GB IDE are hard to find today?

As I read in several posts, you know a lot about this Motorcarman...What do you advise for WDS??

Thx

I have several 2.5" IDE 3.2 to 8.4 GB HDDs as well as a few 44 pin converters for Compact Flash Memory Cards.

Walmart sells them as well.

https://www.walmart.com/ip/46536788?...0cards&veh=sem

The double card holders work so you can have another for extra memory storage (master/slave) so that is also an option.

https://www.amazon.com/Syba-Compact-.../dp/B0036DDXUM

The PCMCIA to CF adapters also work in the PTU so you can have additional memory.

https://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&ke...l_1qyot4pw5k_e

Lots of options.

I think that is what a few members have used. I have not tried a SSD but it should work.

So let me give you an overview on MY Arsenal I have collected so far.

First it is the bunch of original hard disks.

Common is the 3.03 GB Fujitsu Disk but I happend to find also a 4GB IBM Travelstar.

As they are really hard to find on Ebay I also got a 6.4 GB harddisk that works fine.

Then I tried the 4 GB and 16GB CF-Card. After that worked I ordered a bunch of 4 GB-Cards for the rest of the Units - also to swap Systems.

Now entering the System with the 3.3 GB, 4 GB and 6.4 GB disks they just have to be auto-detected in the BIOS.

The 4 GB CF-Card is just the same.

Putting in the 16 GB-Card it even detected the full capacity.

So even in Windows it is fully detected and assisted.

I tried to do that with a 20GB harddisk and it would not even pass the first BIOS splash screen.

So my recommendation is, as well as Bob's, to buy the adapter (3€s) and the CF-card.

IDE 44-Pin Stecker auf CF Kompakter Flash Stecker Verbinder Adapter J8O4

4 GB Compact Flash CF Karte 4GB HighSpeed 133x SMI222

OK, I'm ready to get in the game.

I found an old WDS with docking station - no cables. Apparently it runs, but will obviously need new battery on the PTU.

I've read through this fascinating thread, and I believe I need to do the following:

1. I can construct a power cord, at least temporarily using Post#355. I need cord A204 to make this power supply permanent.

2. I need to find a B203 cord, even though a B280 cord may work for my XJS, based on Posts#343 and 344, to communicate, and hopefully reset settings. (I'm particularly interested in trying to reset adaptive settings)

3. Can I purchase a CF card and adapter to replace the hard drive? I see many recent mentions of that, and it seems like a simple, and cost effective change to make!

4. The WDS I found was used for Ford, so I will need the software. At this point, can the software be loaded on to a compact flash card and used with my previous Point#3?

5. The RAM upgrade seems simple. I've ordered a 128GB, PC66, SODIMM RAM stick as recommended in Post #8.

6. I don't quite understand the need for the docking station. (The WDS I found does indeed have it though) Is it really just for charging?

Thanks for all help. I will share any unique findings with this thread. Would love to find out if this device can finally access the adaptive settings in the AJ16 engine!

just download the 3 iso files
put the image of wjds_eng_4 on your CF-card with norton Ghost
burn 42a on CD and burn 43 on CD
install CF in the WDS and put you WDS in the docking station
then install cd 42a and then cd 43
