Engine keeps shaking? 05 S-type
Hello once again, its a pleasure and pain to be on here asking for help again. So the engine of my jaguar keeps shaking last time it happened the coil ignition was bad, according to the check engine light, piston number 3 was misfiring. I replaced it. This morning the engine started shaking again..bad, the check engine light did not come on and the rpms were dropping under 1,000 I quickly drove to work and parked it. I have no idea what it can be? My friend said it could be the timing chain but i have no idea what that is? So please feel free to give me any input, don't be discouraged all advice and information is welcome! Please and thank you all.
Sincerely,
Adam

Well you can keep changing them one at a time if you like?
Your car is now 10+ years old. The 6 cylinder has a list of known problems. Take care of them all at once.
Change all the plugs and coils.
Have you fixed the IMT O-rings?
Vacuum elbow replaced?
Take a look around the forum as the 6 cylinder guys have done great work with pictures to document how to do it yourself.
Forget the chains your buddy is clueless. Stop listening to him.

Correct me if I am wrong but I think it might be the catalytic converter, I say because when I give her gas it starts to smell like eggs almost like something is burning or rotten. Could it be that one of the converters is clogged up and theres too much air? Or any suggestions please inform me. I am here to learn and appreciate everyone's guidance and input and am sorry if i begin to sound like a noose or annoying.

Shaking may well be any of several things such as misfires or air leak(s). If it's not happening consistently it's tough for the car to flag codes.
You might try looking at fuel trims or you may have to wait till it's bad enough to throw codes - but that will need consistent enough conditions.
You might hope it's an air leak and go looking via smoke or such as propane - you'd watch fuel trims for the latter.

No elbow on 2003 and up MY 3.0's. Here is a thread that shows ALL vacuum lines for the 2005 3.0. Very well may be the IMT O-rings, when my wifes went the vehicle did not throw any codes either, now that I think of it.

Well guys I changed all the O-rings and and it still kept shaking so I just filled up the tank and ran it for about an hour and then the finally the check engine light came on and plugged it up to the computer and piston number 6 was missing just changed the coil ignition and is running like a champ! Thank you all for the advice and input! Another problem finally solved, now that I think about it I might make a thread just for changing the coil ignitions and on taking the manifold off because I have a feeling the coil ignition on pistons 2, 4, and 5 will go bad soon!

the stype is notorious for not throwing a cel when misfiring till it hits a certain threashold. you have to find out with a scanner that can see a misfire counter in the ecu. then youll see stuff like #6 mifired 8,654 times, #2 367 etc. I would replace all the coils at once when you start getting a couple going. coil replacement is no differant than spark plug wires of days gone by, its modern age tune up. The only reason not done by many is costs. But then who would have imagined that so many new cars with HIDs, to replace light bulb/burner are so expensive and many cases require removing the front bumper and light assembly to change..

Sorry for such a late response been caught up in school and work but I just go to the dealer ship and buy them for $81.79 (american money) each. I do not have the old boxes to see the brand but I'm assuming they are specifically from Jaguar. Piston 1, 2, 4 all misfired at once the other day and the check engine light started to flash so that means damage to the catalytic converters. I replaced all six and now they seemed to be going one by one first it was piston number 3 and 5 then piston 6 and now 1, 2, 4 went out at the same time. I plan on replacing all of them and hopefully the catalytic converters are fine.
