2000 S-Type Stalling During Ilde
Hi All - New to the Forum Need some help
I have a 2000 Jag S Type 3.0L. I had the engine light go on, took it to the dealer and they told me that the intake gaskets need to be replaced. I did so, and $450 later my engine light is still on and now the car is stalling on me when I'm in idle mode. After the car warms up 15 miles of driving or so, if I'm waiting at a traffic light for more then 25-30 seconds, the car stalls. It will also stall if I put it in park and let it sit there for 25-390 seconds. However when driving I do not notice anything, engine sounds good, no noises or rattling etc. Anyone experince anything similiar?

Found the paperwork in the car. The fault codes look to be "P0174 and P0173 (hard to read as I have a scanned copy). Vehicle Running Lean - Test for Vacaum laeaks - leaking at lower intake manifold, replace lower intake gaskets." - as stated earlier, I had this work doen but the probelm has not gone away. I did bring it to another service center since and they did not find any vacum leaks.

[:-]Check those elbows,, i just had to replace mine and it would occassionally stall,, but mostly just had a miss in it.. I think the jag dealer helped to pay their rent with your last visit there,, those gaskets are a soft neopreme or silicon based gasket and they should never go bad unless you overheat the engine.... bet you have a vacuum leak somewhere....good luck-------[8D] ron..

P0173 Fuel Trim Malfunction (Bank 2)
P0174 Fuel Trim too Lean (Bank 2)
one additional thing to look for might also be a bad/clogged fuel filter,, my 2002 SType had intermitent lean fuel problems a couple of months ago that the dealer diagnosed as my fuel pump going bad and wanted almost $600 to repair,, I changed the fuel filter just because I thought it might help extend the life of the pump and it cured it completely. For $8 from Walmart it was a good alternative,,, you can replace it yourself, not very hard to do...let me know if you need anything else... thanks ron

The elbows you were talking about are the elbow breather tube, that was replaced under warranty during my last visit to the dealer. I will try the Fuel Filter and see if that cures the problem.
FYI- I work at Ford so if anyone ever needs a Vin check on their car(s) I let me know and I'll see what I can dig up.

[:@]Fuel filter for an S-Type (2002 ) is under the front wheel, plastic inner-fender panel on the drivers side. You have to remove the front wheel, and then remove the panel,2 screws and 2 plastice plugs, the filter is under that. Release the pressure on the fuel line first or else you could get a face full of fuel,,it is under about 40lbs of pressure, pull the plastic clips off and replace the filter.... takes about 15 minutes... The filter on my S-Type is a Fram G8018, cost $8 at walmart.....thanks ron

[8D] under the hood in the engine compartment at the front of the motor, there is a small schrader valve (looks like an air valve for a tire) that is part of the fuel rails. It has a black plastic cap on it,, remove the cap, take a small match stick or anything that will fit into the valve and let out the pressure. careful as fuel will come out, so have a fire extinguisher available just in case,, usually not a problem,, you can also cover the valve with a rag when you release the pressure and it will catch the gas.... that should do it..let me know if you can`t find the valve and I will send you a picture of mine..good luck,,,,.thanks ron

Get yourself a propane tank (fix a hose to the port) open the bottle slightly and with the engine running place it at possible leak points. All around the intake rubber hose ports etc. You will find the leak for sure this way instead of guessing. (idle will increase or the car will die when you find the spot, have somebody with a steady foot keep the throttle a steady possition regardless of idle...say 1000 rpms and hold it there) Do not vary the throttle at all.
Take care and good luck.
If nothing is found get yourself a fuel pressure tester from the autoparts store a high pressure version (reads to 100psi) plug it in the shreader valve and turn on the car.. match the reading to the factory specifications if too low (compare to manual) then the filter or pump is at fault (usually filter) if not, then the pump.
PS If it was the pump or filter at full throttle you might notice the problem more severely so look for this.

If you can do it yourself I would replace the filter. Go in thinking this will not fix your problem and rather as something that is cheap and good to do anyways. But get yourself that bottle of propane and check for the leak, do it in the order ive stated and you will find your problem.
