All you have to do people is to set any DVD map and press s/w update... if you have a black screen, turn on ignition 2, get out the disk then turn of switch to 0, put back on position 2 and put the new DVD disk or the same into the drive... wait 10-15min on ignition 2, and the screen must be show

Intermittant fault
I have read all the posts on the problems with blank screens - I have a slightly different problem in that my screen goes blank intermittently in that sometimes it is blank for a couple of hours and then comes back for a few days, and at other times it shuts of for a few seconds and then again comes back for a few days. I currently have the latest navigation disc (2011-12) and have tried reloading it but doesn't make any difference (indeed it does even seem to re-load, just goes immediately back to the (working) screen). Do you think it is worth trying to load the LOADING.KWI reflash disc? My dealer wants to take a look at the workings and has asked for the car for a couple of days, but the bill would be more than the car is worth! Thanks for any advice.

Well after reading this thread I got lucky on my 2002 which screen and everything was working but I got a the error when I pushed on Nav. That there was no map disc in reader.
After reading some of the post here it sounded like I had something different going on. I turned my key to where electrical was on and took out my disk holder (mine has a six desk holder in the trunk. I then pushed on the little black button on the left of the reader and my map disc came out. I looked it over and cleaned with a cloth put it back in and turned key in ignition off. Waited just a minute and turned key back just to electric on pushed Nav and then agree and the map came up!
Working fine now. Just need to search around to find and update map disc.
Not sure what I did but I guess it reset itself somehow?

Thanks JagV8. If the problem with my intermittent screen is with the hardware rather than the software, does anyone feel that the problem might be solved if I replaced either the DVD reader in the boot or the screen unit itself? Seems to me that with both items being readily available on Ebay for reasonable money, it would still be cheaper for me to replace both in the hope of curing the problem rather than letting the dealer loose on it for a few hours!

I'd be guessing that intermittent like that might be a connection and I would think it would be in the optical ring (er, I have an S-Type) if the X-Type is the same as I think it is. You could take the various connections apart, clean (er, don't know correct way for these so find out!) and reconnect.
Another way might be to try diagnostics (JLR Mongoose clone) but if it's the optical then I don't think they can do much with that (but should talk to the other car networks).
If you look at the Electrical Guide (JTIS and elsewhere) it also shows the optical stuff.

PM me your email address. I will send you a file. You need to burn it to DVD-R loose then start car, remove map dvd and insert the one you burned. Screen should say updating. If it doesnt, just let it run for 1o minutes, then cycle ignition. I hope it works. If not you likely need DVD reader.

Sorry guys I was off the forum for a long time and just check this threat. here is the file you will need to get rid of the blank screen.
1. Burn in a Dual layer DVD using the slowest speed.
2. Turn on car, insert disk.
3. Turn off car.
4. Turn on car and wait for it to start reading. It should come up automatically.

I just bought a 2003 S-Type 4.2L V8 with the famous "Error 50 51" showing up on the lcd display and a blank nav screen. The inserted nav dvd must be the original one who came with the car. The version.txt file on the dvd shows "COMMENT=2001 ver.1". What can I do? Thanks for your help.

2005 X-Type VDP. NAV, Audio, Climate Controls Not Working
I just purchased this '05. From the day I purchased it the NAV, Audio, Climate controls did not operate at all. The Screen is blank and all the other controls are in operable. The only function is the Ext. temp shows on the small screen and it blows air at medium speed to the defrost vents. Otherwise it seems the entire unit is not getting any power. I do not have the owner's manual. Should I be looking at relays/fuses? If so, which ones?
