Default Another HID Post

Good Afternoon Guys,

I've read through a bunch of posts on HID headlights for my x-type and once I think I have it figured out I read something that makes me unsure of exactly what I need. I'm looking to replace my lows, highs and fog lights with HIDs, I've looked at the kits on flea-bay and then read where Thermo recommended Maxlux or Denso brands as they are better quality. I know that I want 5000K or 6000K for the color and I've seen that I want to stick with the 35W kit. Do I want the H1 bulb type for all three applications or just for high and low beam? If the fog lights are different what should I be looking for in them? If you can provide links to exactly what I want to order that would be even better! I figured while I'm doing this swap, I'll pull the assemblies out and fix the broken adjusters with some 3-D printed ones from the files that I found here in another post.

Thanks for all the help! This forum has been a great resource to learn about fixes for my kitty!

Snake, your high and low beams use an H1 bulb. So, you are good there. As for your fog lights, we need to know the month that your car was built. The earlier cars used an H11 bulb and I want to say that the newer cars use an H1 also. You can reach under the car and pull out a fog light bulb and see what it says on the base of the bulb. Then you can match up that when you are ordering. Getting the correct bulb and not one of the generic HID bulbs will save you a lot of work and ensure you don't have a water issue later.

Thanks Thermo, I'll take a look at that this evening. If it is an H1 I should be able to get the H1 kit and not have to do all of the modifications that I read about when you installed Nav's lights?

Thanks,
Frank

Snake, that would be correct. sometimes spending a few extra dollars will save you lots and lots of work. From there, the big thing you need to watch for is that you get the polarity correct. You get it backwards and the HID bulb will not light.

Thermo,

Does this seem to be a good kit? It's $150 per kit but seemed to have a good quality Ballust included.

H1: Morimoto Elite HID System - HID Systems from The Retrofit Source Inc

If you have any other recommendations I'm open to those as well. I checked the fog lights and they are H11 bulbs so I'll have to grab those as well when I find the H1 kits.

Thanks,
Frank

Snake, check out: Maxlux 35W AC HID Conversion Kit | eBay.

This is what I would say you need to go with. If you buy here, tell them the bulb style you want and the temp and they will send you exactly what you are after. This will get you 2 for 1 compared to what you were looking at above.

Thanks Thermo! I was a little leery buying a kit from eBay not knowing how to find one with good ballasts included. I'll order all three from there and install them when I do the headlight adjuster replacement.

Thermo, I pulled the bumper off, baked the lights to open them up, replaced the broken adjusters, got them back together, hooked up the new HID kits and trying to figure out if I need to replace any fuses. The kits provided 20 amp fuses, do you know what fuse numbers I need to replace? So far I've got the high and low beams replaced and plan on doing the fog lights as well. Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Frank

Ok, I think I found the fuses. In the engine compartment fuse box:
F29 and F30 - Right and left dip beam - these are already 20 amp
F1 and F4 - right and left main beam - Thee are 10 amp - do they need replaced with 20's
F2 - fog lights - this is 15amp - does it also need replaced by a 20amp?

Thanks for your time!

Dip beams should be fine as is as these are rated from the factory to handle HIDs.

The main beams, you can up them to 15's to be safe, but the 10's should be fine. Worst case, drive with them as is for a bit and if you find that the fuse is blowing, then up it to 15.

As for the fog lights, I upgraded mine to HIDs and I never upgraded the fuse. Ran just fine for the 5 years I had it installed.

Thermo,

Thanks for all of your guidance in this process. I rebuilt the headlight internals Saturday, put them back together Sunday evening, had the lights in Sunday night, fired them up and only one of them turned on. I was worried that I was going to have to pull everything apart again! Plugged in one of the polarity reversers and voila! Lights! I didn't have a chance to do the fog lights yet because the H11 bulbs were different than the bulbs that I pulled out of the housing. I'll have to see if I can tell what size they are and order another kit. If anyone needs an H11 HID kit, PM me!

Thanks,
Frank

Snake, if they are not H11's, then they are H1's. Jaguar changed the style bulb in the housings over the years. Granted, I would see if the H11's will fit in the opening. A lot of times, a little bit of time with a file will alter the tabs on the outside to make them work. The HID bulb is going to be the same. All that is different is the plastic surrounding the HID bulb.

Yeah, I just saw a post in the "How To" sticky about the fog light replacement and mine looked like the ones that were replaced there. Like you said, the only difference was the three tabs that hold the bulb in are too far into the housing and a smaller diameter. I'll have to look and see if I can use the stock bulb holder to hold the H11 bulb in place.

I probably should have taken some pics of the process and put together a post on replacing the plastic adjusters but the info is out there on youtube if you look for it. I bought the carami kit from eBay with the metal posts/***** and they seem much more substantial than what I pulled out after I opened the housings up.
