Look at the discs
Usually there is the minimum thickness stamped or cast into the rotor. There are also wear indicators attached to the pads. A visual inspection should tell you a lot. If the electric wear sensors activate there is no reset. They must be repalced. Because of ABS and Traction Control brakes wear faster, especially the rear. Between 20K and 30K miles would be a good time to check them.
